GB24 boomerang

GB-24 C10

There are few toys in my collection that represent what Alen coined the “Karmic Boomerang” for me as this one. The only other that comes close is the result of the extreme generosity of a certain Uncle Warren, but thats for another blog.

Pan back a decade. The frenzy of competition for the right piece was fierce to put it mildly. The early days of ebay bidding wars was in full effect and even though we complain about prices now, we sometime selectively forget that even common toys by todays standards were perceived as much more “R@RE” than they are today, and bore prices that reflected it.

Tiring of the stress of what should be a fun hobby, I found a website, that mirrored my growing feelings about what the toys and the memories should be about.
How was it through my rush to collect , I sort of forgot a little bit about the funk, and why it was I was searching for these totems.
Perhaps this is the ever present sentiment that goes through its cyclical life span every few years and has become the mantra of the oldskoolers who watch wistfully as a new wave of people rediscover and reacquaint themselves with their childhood friends.

Why do we do it?

I found a kindred spirit when I first contact Alen about selling him my GB24. It was a toy he had expressed an interest in locating, and I felt perhaps it would find a better home with him. I was after all in the beginning stages of my c10 illness, and the toy although mint as one could be, the box had begun to beckon an upgrade. The voices since then have gotten louder, and my threshold for ignoring it, has lessened.
I contacted him and offered the toy at a third less than what I paid, simply because it felt like the right thing to do. The importance of the green, had to take a back seat to the importance of the T28 blue so to speak.

We met for the first time in Porter square mall in Cambridge, which was not far from where he lived at the time. My memory of the specifics fails me, but we met at the benches near the atm, and exchanged our greetings. Sushi followed. I felt comfortable almost immediately, and realized this beautiful toy was going to the best home possible.

From there, the friendship began, and endured. The combined faith in the goodness of our fellow collectors being the cornerstone to what is so utterly fantastic about this niche of nerdiness.
It took me much longer to find the right replacement. Like a number of other pieces in the collection that I sold off in hopes of finding a upgrade, it took years. The better part of nine plus in fact.

I thought it would never happen.

But when I did find it, as luck would have it, it was when money was tight and any hope of scoring it was not likely. Lamenting the loss, I casually mentioned it to my old friend, who without hesitating , graciously spotted me for the purchase.
I was floored and grateful and amazed. Well maybe not amazed as I knew Alen’s character enough to know, he understood it was never about the money. It was about the pursuit and love of the toy , and what they represented. It was about the friendship above all else. About the kids who never met, but the adults who did, and cultivated a place that would serve as a home to others like us. A land of misfit toy collectors.

So it came full circle. A generosity of a decade past came back. The boomerang is alive and well, and for that I am glad. Probably more than I could rightly express.

So what to learn from this? I figure I have rambelled on enough as it is, but here it is in its most distilled form.

Life is short, so love thy chogokin neighbor bitches.

Karmic toy boomerang is go.

Out.

Pint Sized Matsumoto Goodies

Filed under: Toy News — Jerilock @ 6:12 pm

So after a while of waiting I received the latest additions to my shrine of Blue Arcadia obsession. I got home from the post office and sat down to unwrap and expose my newest acquisitions with shaking hands. And as soon as my eyes fell upon them I had one of those “ummm…okay then” sort of moments. If you were to set these next to an Eidai Grip piece, it would be like standing a GA-01 next to a Jumbo Machinder Mazinger Z. Yeah, they’re tiny as hell, as these pics demonstrate (that’s a dime put in for scale)

That having been said they’re sweet as hell, I just love the funky, soft, off scale sculpts on them. A happy reminder of a time when these were sold as toys, not collectors statues or any such thing. Another neat detail I notice is how for each ship they have a different distinct card printed up, not like they just used the same background image for both ships (I’m assuming that the center section under where the bubble wold mount lists info on each ship)

Looking at the cards they were attached to I’d say these were sold stapled in rows on larger display boards (and yes I now have a burning desire to get a complete display of these). Until I stumbled on the auction for these I’ve never heard of these before. My hope is that they made other ships from the Harlock series in this set, maybe even some Mazone enemy vessels to fight with. One final note, I don’t recognize any makers marks, or notice any kind of logos anywhere on these, hopefully someone here recognizes something and can shed more light on these things.

Subway Special II: Rubber-band Robo

Another blow-mold GR goodie, only this one hauls ass across the room via rubber-band powered wheels. There is a description in Sanford Mock’s “Vinyl Treasure Mook” by Yuji Nishimura…anyone wish to translate?

I don’t think this is a Pachi, although it has no markings. The size and detail level really make this toy.

Jyarinco: Dancougar’s Den

Filed under: Erik Sjoen,Toy News — erik sjoen @ 2:13 am

In the murky depths of Tokyo’s sleepy Machiya neighborhood lies one of the best vintage Japanese toy stores around.. Jyarinco. Per BrianF/JoshB’s book Tokyo Underground; “An amazing store with every conceivable kind of toy in stock, Jyarinco is the last of Tokyo’s hidden gems.”.

No detailed pics, no in-depth write up.. Just take a look at their website. WOW. This place had us shell shocked. So much cool shit to be had. The shop owner was actually cool about me taking pics of this rare Dancougar store display. When I was firming up my purchases I actually noticed yet ANOTHER one in the back behind the counter. He offered it to me for $1K but unfortunately I had no reasonable way to get it home.. That’s two store displays (flashman in osaka) I found in under 2 weeks within my price range, yet totally out of my grasp.. ARGHH..

If you take a trip to Tokyo and plan to do some VINTAGE toy shopping, Jyarinco is a total must.

address: 1-20-9 Machiya, Arakawa-ku
telephone: 03-3893-4045
website: www.jyarinco.com
hours: 12:30 – 20:30

The best advice I could give you is to have a native Japanese speaker call first before you go. The time before last I went and made the trip all the way out there to find that nobody was home. Talk about disappointing.. Heed my warning, kids. CALL FIRST!

Vintage Vinyl Cometh!

My YHJ collected haul arrived today, and with it my first vintage vinyls. There’s more stuff to open, but I’m pacing myself, so I only took out a few things for now. I am just totally enamored with the rough and utilitarian nature of these Sofus… the sprays and paint aren’t always perfect, but the sculpts are filled with fun and appreciation for both the characters and toy-design. I love how Gaiking’s backpack is clearly handpainted, and has brush-strokes and unevenness to it.

sofu-shelf1

My Shelf so far… ignore the Mighty Mugg, it just doesn’t fit anywhere else right now. There’s more coming for vintage, and some modern retro stuff in the near future.

gaiking4

My Gaiking has two right arms apparently. What’s weird is the paint for the silver is extended around the whole arm on the left, but only goes around the front half on the right (and correct) arm. Daiku-Maryu is simply adorable.

Surrounded by other toys, Big-Scale Sasuraiger goes beserk and attacks the first thing he sees!
