Bandai Gundam RX178 MKII vinyl (1985)

Filed under: Co. BANDAI,Erik Sjoen — erik sjoen @ 3:40 am

13″ painted vinyl of the RX178 MKII Gundam from the series “Zeta Gundam” made by Bandai in 1985. This piece is more commonly found unpainted/white vinyl in a cardboard/black box. I totally wish that Bandai would have made other mecha from this series ala Johnny Ridden or Rick Dias ? Denjin, a small garage vinyl maker, did make many of these gundam baddies like Dom and Zaku, Roger can comment more on this.. Ironically, they are actually far more difficult and far more costly to find than this particular vintage piece.. Go figure.

Bandai 1990 Super Valkyrie – a black sheep in the herd?

Filed under: Co. BANDAI,Declarations,Toy Love — thomas @ 10:48 am

The last of the truly vintage 1/55 Hi-Metal Macross Valkyrie toys, the VF-1S Super Valkyrie (Roy color scheme) released by Bandai in 1990 has a bit of a reputation with Macross fans as being inferior to previous releases. The main reason for this are some relatively major mold changes. Due to this, this toy remains somewhat unloved and is probably one of the cheapest vintage Valkyries available, usually selling for not much more than the more recent Super Valkyrie re-releases on Yahoo Auctions Japan (around 10k yen).

But is this reputation justified? This I want to explore in this review. Now I must say it straightaway: I like the more controversial changes. However, there are some other minor problems that may cause your mileage to vary, and that actually tarnish the toy more than the mold changes that are often so despised.

Let’s start with the box:

Flashman Flash Titan

Flashman Flash Titan

So yeah, Flashman Flash Titan. An interesting toy with loads of nice features. Rubber tires, some diecast in the cab, freaking huge trailer, chromed bits:

Mighty Truck

Furthermore, hook up the trailer to the front hole of the cab, fold in the wheels on both cab and trailer, flip out the tail wings and main wings, and we have flight mode (also pictured at the top of this article):

Fly!

Aside from this, the toy is characterised by some neat little features that add some realism to this decidedly futuristic truck. The trailer has opening doors at the rear end that may also serve as ramps:

…and small flip-out wheels at the front of the trailer so it can stand on its own:

The cab is based around the same design as the Machine Robo Tough Trailer cab, with a few tweaks. Of course, it shares the opening doors (required for the transformation), clear windows and minimalistic interior with its Machine Robo twin:

The cab changes into Titan Boy, a fairly bricky but nicely detailed robot. The arms are articulated at the shoulders and elbows, while the legs are at the hips and ankles (required for the transformation). The upper legs are made from diecast metal:

Titan Boy has a dual missile launcher hidden in his belly:

Sadly I’m missing Titan Boy’s Radial Cutters, so you’ll have to imagine those. It looks like a cross between a shuriken and a truck wheel chromed silver.

The Flash Titan trailer also changes into a robot, which then combines with Titan Boy to form the Great Titan. Here Titan Boy is shown next to the Flash Titan in robot mode:

Gattai on the toy works by opening the back of the Flash Titan and inserting Titan Boy into it:

Gattai step 1

Flash Turn! Great Titan! step 1

Gattai step 2

Titan Boy’s head telescopes out to fit into the Flash Titan’s helmet, and then looks out through the holes in said helmet:

Great Titan:

This guy is Titanic!!!

This guy is Titanic!!!

Without Titan Boy inserted in it, the Flash Titan’s robot mode is somewhat loose, and the legs tend to collapse on their own. Combined, this problem is entirely gone. The combined mode is impressively solid, large (over 30 cm tall!) and very, very bulky. However, this all has a drawback, as Great Titan only has shoulder and elbow articulation, like Titan Boy. No waist joint ‘ere, folks. Also, Great Titan’s only gimmick is its size. No flip-out missile launchers or other fun stuff. This makes the Great Titan a bit of a let down compared to the other modes.

Conclusion: While not having an equally sophisticated transformation as the Flash King, the Flash Titan certainly is a fun, worthwhile toy.

Fight!

Messing around on a lazy Saturday morning before work… I’ve had a number of vinyl kaiju show up lately, along with more of my YHJ from last week and started messing around. The kaiju is Junker V from Wombat Toys.

Getter 3 and the Scopedog try to hold off Junker V while the civilians flee!

But it’s no use!

Can no one stand up to this terrible monster?!?

Look! The Goggle team has arrived to help with evacuation and stop the monster!

POW! Goggle Jet takes down Junker V after Goggle Dump gets trapped while saving civvies.

But no! The monster is back up!

We need Goggle V! Form up!

Goggle V online! Prepare for battle!

“Have at you!”

The day is saved!

Hee…hee… OOW!

Filed under: Co. BANDAI,Toy News — roboto @ 7:32 pm

The GX-45 Mazinger Z is already out in some Taipei toyshops even before Bandai’s official May 3oth release date. Although it’s nice to brag about being one of the first few to own this SOC, I know that feeling will be short-lived after everyone else gets theirs, especially since Bandai made sure to produce at least one for every SOC collector and their descendents’ progeny.

As you all know, collectors who buy the first production run get a pair of official Chogokin gloves and a wipe cloth.

Well, I’m sure many of you can’t wait to try these on – maybe even this guy.

DX Houraiou in the house.

IMG_0749.JPG

Ninja Senshi Tobikage (忍者戦士飛影 lit. Ninja Warrior Tobikage) looked like it was a pretty cool show. Ninja robots, combining animal robots that gattai into larger robots. Honestly, this was on the tail end of my collecting as a kid. The world of skateboarding was taking over and by the summer of 1986 the last thing I wanted to be doing was sitting in the house playing with robots, I wanted to be out building launch ramps.

So, fast forward 23 years and I’m all about the Tobikage stuff. Picked this DX Houraiou up in Japan recently and it’s actually a pretty decent piece. It combines well with the Tobikage Chogokin GC-32 and in “falcon mode” it totally delivers. There are two other pieces in the same vain as the Houraiou that combine with the Chogokin Tobikage. Bakuryuu, a blue dragon and Kurojishi, a yellow lion that are all just about the same size (10″ height).

Ohata Koichi is one hell of a designer. Known probably best for his work on Albegas, Laserion and Gundam ZZ, his Tobikage design is above average for that time period in my opinion.

Diecast content is minimal, but what do you expect for 1986. Well, back to my Sho Kosugi flicks. Later!
