06.03.98: Popy Gatchaman G5 Ryu
I actually first purchased this toy sometime in the 70's while visiting
Taipei. If you know the city, then you remember the Ding Hau
underground arcade, filled with Galaxian machines, and the tiny but
brimming toy store that thrived among them.
They had everything, and frequently brought back items from Japan
which were unboxed, or without packing foam because they'd try to
stuff as much diecast as possible into a sack. (When I got my
Nomura Yamato 1:1300 from them, I was bummed to get
the box flattened: no foam for me!)
Anyway, one day they had Ryu diaplayed in the window: just the styro shell, no
outer box. As ugly as his
head was, he came with a totally cool helmet and sidearm. I remember being shocked,
even at that age, by the coolness of actuallly having a Gatchaman figure
like this. It looks like they attempted to accurate portray the body anatomy,
and to provide all the little things a Gatchaman freak would want.
From that day on, I kept my eye out for the other characters in the
line. I just had to know if Ken Owashi had a sonic boomerang or not.
(Allow me to take a moment to complain about how ugly and lame the new
Toei figure of Ken is. You'd think people would have learned from
the new Star Wars figures how not to do an action figure.)
I have, to this day, not seen any of the other toys in this line.
