This is the big kahuna that started it
all: the original GA-01 Mazinger Z. This
is the first "chogokin" toy, and its success
spawned the Japanese character-toy industry
of the 1970's.
The
GA-01 comes in at least five separate
versions.
|
Version
1: Rocket-punch buttons located on
the shoulders; a pair of shooting missiles
located under the breastplate; a pair
of levers for the chest-missiles located
on the back. No other accessories.

|
Version
2: Identical to Version 1, but the chest-missile
mechanism was disabled. The slots for the
firing levers and missile ports under the
breastplate are covered by stickers. Comes
with a Scramble Dash wing. |

Version 2 (With Box)
|
Version
3: Similar to Version 2, but the holes
on the back that were covered by stickers
are completely gone. (Popy apparently re-worked
the mold to remove them.) |
GA-01
Version 3
|
Version
4: Rocket-punch buttons moved to bicep;
body identical to Version 3. |
|
Version
5: A completely re-worked sculpt released
in 1979, this featured integral missile-launchers
built into the chestplate (not underneath.)
A limited-edition gold version was released
as well. This piece was re-released in 1986
in the "Etarnal Heroes" line. |
