Ode to a Parcel of Popinica
Of e-mail sent and money spent:
A diecast trio find
Of long weeks suffering anxiousness
for a packet tightly sealed and
betwined
The long sought sound of tires on gravel
perks ears and sets heart a-quiver
A rush upstairs only confirms:
It's here! Finally delivered!
A moment first for gathering
hair prickling at the nape
then slowly slips the blade beneath
a flap to slit the tape
Nestled amidst the carefully crumpled
Asian newsprint wads
there sits,
swaddled
in bubble-wrap
three toys fit for the gods
Again an indrawn breath marks true
an awe filled reverent pause
and then, with no further ado
let fly the eager claws
Wonderful, happy, inviting
boxes
bordered in a silv'ry grey
proclaim to eyes, which have hungered long
'This is a joyous day!'
One by one the cheerful cocoons
of a toy age long since spent
are peeled free most carefully
no flap gets creased or rent
Nesser
is the frisky one
wry mouth and winking chrome
Tiny squeaking wheels below
blue torso smooth as loam
Skyler
: what a wily chap!
Snapping jaws, sagacious eyes
Blue missiles for the poinking
while patrolling household skies
Bazoler
-Oh Bazoler!
Your horns they shine and dart
With eyes and mouth determinedly set
you unerringly pierce the heart
Collect the trash, break down the box
the toys: posed on a shelf
Packaging and the small bits stored
'Poorer but feeling wealth
And so Gaiking's
lonesome
no more
his trio has come to stay
The only downside is the fact
that we're all too old to play
