CURRENT RUMBLE

Many of us amongst the Gundam fans (everybody except Keith) actually prefer the Zeon type mobile suits - the fat stompin' feet, the menacing monoeye. For us, the production of a DX Sazabi toy is an important event. Sure, maybe Sazabi isn't everyone's favorite (Neo) Zeon design. Maybe you prefer the classic Zaku, the brutish Dom, or the sleek Kaempfer. But seeing a Zeon type design finally receive the big plastic treatment is enough to warm the heart.

I'm happy to report that the Sazabi toy does not disappoint. Hard plastics, sturdy construction, bright paints, and sharp details make for a near-perfect toy. Articulation is acceptable - those shoulders do rotate. He can grip his beam shotrifle, beam saber, beam tomahawk, or beam sword securely. And he's BIG. That's the Master Grade Sazabi being dwarfed in the photo, folks.

The gimmicks are not numerous, but are nicely done. The backpack funnel holder opens, the funnels detach and deploy. Also, the forehead lifts to reveal the top of the cockpit. As with the Master Grade kit, the cockpit is not removeable. Unfortunately, the beam saber hilt can't be stored in his wrist.

There are minor quibbles I could raise with the toy. Like the other recent DX Gundam releases, some assembly is required; in this case, weapons, backpack, and shield. It's mostly easy work, except for the pesky funnels, which bring back not-so-fond memories of assembling the Master Grade Sazabi. Also, the bulky skirts hamper leg poseability. If Sazabi attempts to spread 'em too wide, he's apt to lose hip armor or even a leg (which is easily reattached). Overall, though, he's less prone to shedding than the DX GP-01fB.

The best news about this toy is the fact he'll be available soon at your local Mega Lo Mart for around $30. Don't say that Bandai doesn't love you.
