Check it: Corporate Research indicates raising light levels boosts productivity. Corporate Research also indicates dropping light-levels does the same. Stupid Corporate Research? Not really: it's change that drives us to excel and create. So I take a deep breath. Then I move the shelf. Two hours in, the floor is a carpet of metal: clusters of primary plastic and chrome glint off the displaced shelf-light, arms and legs akimbo amidst the swords. The cat prowls through the battleground with kaiju-like grace, rounding a pyre of Valks. Jumbos stand, mountainous and erect over the topography of color and worth. Something triggers memory: I'm taken back to the days of actual Play, when toys belonged on the ground, worked to the bone. Eight hours later, I am fully moved. Kicked up dust results in a major allergy (I get a chogo-rash!) Jumbo Poseidon takes a chip to the inner shin, but otherwise, we are clear of casualties. Something about the experience of hand-carrying and handling each figure reestablishes some value for me. Here are the pics: try not to wince... Time for current events: First, Japanese robot-fetishist COOP says ARRRR!! On Saturday, May 6th, 6-10 pm Coop's latest show opens at sixspace gallery, 1851 West Chicago Avenue. A contingent of left-coast ToyboxDX staff and buds will be congregating in Chicago, to see Coop's art (and to jack Sean Bonner's Jumboland collection.) On view will be limited edition, silk-screened poster art and original drawings. Coop's also doing a meet-and-greet at Quimby's bookstore on Friday, May 5th, 7-10pm. So support your robot-collecting brethren and book a flight! If you'd like additional information regarding this exhibition, running from May 6 - May 28, email Caryn at info@sixspace.com and hit sixspace.com to read more!
