Banpresto Popy GA-100
Mobile Suit Gundam RX78
The only Gundam toy I respected and desired as a child was the diecast 5" Clover RX78.
Which probably explains why I like this piece so much.
Banpresto's new toy closes a loop for me. Limited to 10,000, and made in Japan, the
GA-100 has some great things going for it. Yes, the proportions are way off,
and it's got a certain plastic-looking finish, but the
Popy GA-100 is, without a doubt, chogokin -- not an insignificant accomplishment.
When I think about some of the newer Bandai "chogokin"
like Ryotsu and Reideen (SOC Mazinger aside),
I get kind of pissed. They're interesting objects, with innovative features
and design -- but they don't begin to capture the essence of
what I loved about chogokin as a kid.
For one thing, I miss the mis-proportioning and solidity
of the classic 5" Popy super robots.
The inaccuracy of scaling between chest, arms and legs
gave the toys a certain robust quality. They were solid, and meant to be banged around
rather than displayed.
Also: let me take moment to rant about the notable absence of shooting fists in new toys.
Even some these newfangled Zords could eek out a place in my heart if they'd
just shoot something -- anything. This Popy Gundam comes with two sets of fists --
the traditional indication that they should be used.
