OK, so when I was a kid, I had one of a series of toys that I cannot find any info for.

It was a glove that had a vaguely Barbie sized male doll torso on it. Most of the glove was black, but the pointer and middle fingers were made to look like shorts so that those fingers became the legs for the figure.

There were maybe 4 or 5 different kinds, all sports players. They came with boots to put on the ends of your fingers to complete the lifelike package. (accurate for sports players with one leg significantly shorter than the other)

I had the skateboarder. I'm pretty sure there were also soccer and football figures.

I cannot come up with any combination of "glove", "doll", "figure", "sports", "toy" etc. etc. that yields any results.

Does anyone here remember what I am talking about? This would have probably been late 1980s.

Thank you

3D printed figure with "action figure" like articulation (6 replies)

Hello everyone!

I recently got into 3D printing and I was wondering how far I could take the functionality of my models. This is my first attempt at a figure with proper “action figure” articulation. It worked out pretty well. It basically works like a snap together model kit. It has about 30 points of articulation. I had to do some sandpapering in order to make everything fit together but that is something one should expect when 3D printing. The figure holds firmly together and all the joints have a nice range of motion. The seam lines are a little bit big but I believe that has more to do with the resolution of my printer then the 3D file. The figure is about 7 inches tall. It has a couple of swapable hands and the weapons can be stored on the back of the figure. The figure is called Dan Generiko and he is a hero in an apocalyptic world where genetically enhanced humans wage war against humans who have given up their natural bodies for robotic ones. Dan protects the ordinary humans who are caught in the middle of the fighting of the two factions.

Maybe this has been posted before but these guys are subbing and streaming a bunch of old school anime including Blackjack, Creamy Mami, and probably of particular interest to toy fans of recent SOCs and older DX toys, Yatterman, New Yatterman, Tekkaman and Tobikage.

[animesols.com]

What's interesting is that they've partnered with the Japanese studios and have a kickstarter-like funding model for the physical releases. I sincerely doubt stuff like Yatterman has a chance of reaching the goal (but I'll pledge anyway) but I would think at least Tekkaman and Blackjack would.

So it looks like NECA will be doing the "Pacific Rim" toys. There will be a 7 inch line of the Jaegers AND Kaiju (1st series will include Gypsy Danger (the USA Jaeger), Crimson Typhoon (China's Jaeger) and Knifehead Kaiju. There will also be an 18 inch, super articulated, electronic Gypsy Danger too. You can already pre-order the first series 7 inch line in some web places and can find pics of all the toys (except the Knifehead kaiju) all over the .NET.

Now, I don't own any NECA stuff and I always associated their products to be "McFarlanish"... nicely detailed, PVC figs with limited articulation but I forgot they have done some really compelling stuff in the past, like the MATRIX stuff, the big ass BALROG, and the jumbo sized Predators. But it looks like these Pacific Rim figs might turn out to be pretty cool. But I wonder if it's better to hold out for the inevitable Diecast toys from one of them Hong Kong companies?

Just got TEN Marie Calendar's premium chicken pot pies from Sam's club for EIGHT dollars...I mean, I can't tell you how much that breaks down to for each one, but it's got to be less than a dollar at least. We're talking full-on, crust on top, sides and bottom cpps!

Now, here's the question...is it still a chicken pot pie proper if it is sold without side or bottom crust? For example, KFC and Boston Market both sell "cpp's" (as it were) in a cardboard bowl with just top crusting. No side crust...no bottom crust.

If I wanted a pile of chicken and veggies with a piece of bread on top, I'd order that. Chicken Pot Pie it is not...so say I. How say you?

A couple weeks ago I was trolling Ebay, as I am prone to do, when I stumbled upon fresh prey...I loose lot of popynica including the typical domesic fare...Sky Arrow, broken Liabe, broken Varitank, BUT it also had a JAKQ'er Tank AND a loose ST (Sun) Vulcan Jaguar!!! All for ninety bucks or so. I THOUGHT I bought it, and ran it through Paypal...but after noticing that it hasn't shown up, I looked and found no trace of the transaction on Ebay or Paypal.

Hallucination? OR did I just not hit the stupid "confirm payment" box that fails to center on the screen. Wife vouches for me telling her about this purchase the night I supposedly made it, lending to the latter explanation. Then again, I may have been seeing things that night too?
Anyway...lesson of the day...hit ALL of the freakin' buttons when you buy something!!!

Going out on a limb here, guys, and doing a bit of blogging. I've done so with a nod to ToyboxDX, which has given me so much access to the wonders of the Japanese toy world. My wife challenged me to review one toy from my collection each week, and that's what I aim to do. I'm by no means the expert on things that so many here are, so if you do find any glaring factual errors in my posts (if you actually deign to read it), then please do let me know. This is also a work in progress and I'm using only the barest template at this time. I need to spend some time creating graphics that will work for what I have in mind long-term. That said, please head over to MechaGeezer's Toy Ramblings. I would like to introduce you to the release of my first PVC figure. It is not from Japan but its weird style would fit in quite well with every Japanese monster or giant robot collection:
The Mechawhales figure is 5.5 inches wide and 3.5 inches tall. It is made from PVC and has a highly detailed paintjob. The shoulders, wrists and tail can be rotated. The figure comes in a collector friendly box that makes it very easy to take the figure out of the packaging and putting it in again. It also comes with a cardboard diorama for displaying the figure outside the box.

You can also check out animations based on these figures at: http://www.mechawhales.com
Thanks for taking the time to check out my work!

So, I like to think I have some pretty cool toys. But anyone who's been over to my spot (and who appreciates these things) knows the horror show of how I've displayed them in the past. "Display" is emphasized here because at times, this has meant anywhere from toys cruelly jumbled together on a random bookshelf with no care or order--at best!--to big fucking hoarder-style piles of boxes on the floor. [See Jim's 2011 Summit coverage!]

Over the past couple years, though, I've been steadily cleaning up my act. Because they're such a self-contained series that stands clearly apart from anything else in my collection, I decided to organize my Toho Marusan/Bullmark collection into a single detolf from Ikea. Yup...a jin-yoo-wine display case for some of the coolest shit I have. The next obvious question was how to illuminate the thing...

I wasn't particularly interested in buying a complex lighting "kit", where you have to wire everything together into a rectifier and all that. I wanted something that was relatively simple to install, something that looked clean, a most of all, something that *worked*. After doing some research, I went with these "puck" LED lights available in most hardware stores:

I bought a couple packs of them to get a total of four pucks, bought some wood screws ('cause the adhesive backing on them is utter crap), and attached them to the "ceiling" of my detolf. The warm white light they put out is crazy-bright, and there are no wires involved *at all* to clutter up the look of the case.

The only problem is that the light they put out is extremely directional--they're like tiny spotlights. And there are only four of them. The effect is actually kinda interesting: each figure in the case gets just a little light cast on them, creating a sort of artsy, noir feel. Neat...but not exactly ideal when trying to display stuff. I'll post a pic of it when I get a chance...

Oh, and one other slight annoyance is that the lights automatically shut off after 30 minutes. These are LEDs, so the batteries last for-fucking-ever...so why not program the damn auto-shut-off for two or more hours??? Or better yet, make it a switch allowing the user to set the time.

Anyway, like I said, I just feel like there's gotta be a better option out there. I did some more digging today, and I think I've come up with one possibility: LED net lights:

The idea is to drape this net across the sides and back of the case. Fortunately, these nets are available in 4'x6', which is just about perfect given a detolf's dimensions. I'm guessing each of these little LEDs puts out plenty of light, and because they're dispersed across the sides and back, they should light everything inside pretty evenly...unlike the puck lights.

However, unlike the puck lights, these things are basically all-wire. I'm afraid the net will pretty much ruin the "off-axis" (from the sides) view. Also, you don't have any real control over which direction the LEDs on the net are pointing...so instead of the clean spotlight effect you get with the pucks keeping all the light more or less contained within the case, the net's light will be scattered in every damn direction.

So...I dunno. I think I might just buy one of these nets to give it a shot...but does anyone else have any other ideas? I'm sure I'm not the first to run into this quandary...

Do fantasy movies really suck? (12 replies)

Just watched Der Hobbitzen: Parte Der Firstenzen. Spoiler alert - it's based on a flisy kid's book. But it's pretty much what you would expect from Piotr Jackson if you saw his indie trilogy that came out several years ago. Nothing surprising there.

However! We (unknowingly) saw the film in the 48 frames-per-second format and it was a nauseating visual mess. The clarity was so intense that the characters often seemed to float in front of the backgrounds and when they moved they would jump with spastic ejaculations that were utterly unnatural. During the vast, panning shots the camera would also appear to stop and then jerk suddenly in a new direction. It was anything but smooth. And it never relented. In our small party no one's eyes or brain ever adjusted and we felt motion sick at the end when we tried to walk out of the theater.

The amped up frame rate was such a shockingly bad and distracting experience that it almost ruined an otherwise reasonable film. I can't believe anyone in charge approved the decision to do it or didn't gasp in regretful horror during any pre-release screening. I'll be going out of my way to avoid 3D/48fps releases in the future.

Oh, and the Golden Eagles still suck. Why do the good guys never remember to call on them right from the start? Lame. Fantasy plots still suck as much as sci-fi.

Much as I love Aliens, I never really fantasized about having toys of the colonial marines (the dropship and APC, on the other hand...).

That said, if the finished product looks like these protos, then we may, in Hudson, have the most incredible facial sculpt on any action figure ever.
