From TF Source--

- The US version will be white, the Takara will be more true to the white and coloring of the G1 Metroplex
- The Japanese version will include two guns, the US version just 1 gun
- It is believed the Japanese version will feature chromed/metallic paint apps the US will not, but this is not confirmed. When we asked Takara did not say yes or no.
Before you laugh at the 'more white' remark, note this pic that someone on the TF board posted:
Not to be racist, but some whites are better than others.

I've always been an import snob anyway, but the two guns + possible chrome apps sealed the deal. Even with EMS shipping, and assuming the exchange rates remain stable all the way through August (please, lord), HLJ should be cheaper than BBTS by about $30. Already preordered.

***Yes, I know I could buy two Hasbro Metroplexes for that price and get two guns that way, but then I wouldn't be ballin'.

Megatron looks to be played as a secondary villain (Did they not see TF Revenge of the Fallen) and all of the extra horn stuff looks kinda cool on some figures but plays out pretty quick. This is looking definitely like it's going the way of Beast Wars and that is where I got off years ago.
A couple of interesting vids. The guy who made them visited a contact in Hong Kong who apparently is a key figure in Fansproject. That man's office is stacked with toys. He could be on an episode of hoarders. Not just TFs here, but a lot of other Japanese robots, new and vintage.

Some of the Cantonse conversation:

Do you have toys in your house?
Have no toys at home, except for my son’s.

Question about how he finds stuff:
See it in the street, buy it.

Question about where he ships all this stuff:
I don’t sell this stuff. Sometimes I buy doubles and I don’t even realize it.

The last couple minutes of part 2 of the video touch on stuff we've been talking about, as far as comparing the quality of 3rd-party toys to official HasTak ones.

A few words about the FOC vs. Classics Grimlock... Retire Classics Grimlock now. (3 replies)

He's popping up on TRU shelves now and one of the people at TRU told me the scalpers are hitting this figure HARD. I was told that they come two Grimlocks and one Blaster per case which is how I've seen them. Passed on the Giant Rolaids Blaster like I did on Rolaids Soundwave but Ol' Grim is a must.

I have always thought that the Classics Grimlock was a poor representation of Grimlock. Way too small for the Classics and the head splitting into two feet looked more like the designers were trying to be more different in the transformation than effective. The small chest, and tail for a sword seemed like an after thought in robot mode. What I really hated were those Gene Simmons/ Kiss style feet. Never ever looked right to me.

I didn't follow the FOC or the WFC lines very much but as soon as I saw this FOC Grimlock I thought "Finally a re-boot Grimlock for my Classics line!" and he fits the classics line sooooo well and perfectly to scale at least in robot mode. Short of the chest making little wings with the little arms and the feet claws going in the opposite direction (Both of which I never noticed until someone brought it up on the Youtube reviews...Emgo perhaps?) I would have never noticed. I'm not a big box person either... like Emgo BUT like how these boxes are designed to put the figures back in with no fuss is epic.

The final test. My 7yr old son who only knows G1 Transformers from the DVD's that we watched looked at the FOC Grimlock and said" You finally got Grimlock!" and he has no knowledge of WFC or FOC. That's how good they hit the mark on this one!

What will I do with my Classics Grimlock? He'll either stay in Dino mode (more raptor than T-rex) go on the yard sale table in the future, or trade it with one of you guys who wanted and missed out on the original 1st run classics. (I'd really like to trade him for the new re-colored Breacher figure which I have not found EVER because it is such a cool mold.)

Final thought... Short of MP-Grimlock which is a perfect 10. This figure is the best Grimlock I have seen AND your kids can play with it!

What's crazy about this thing is that it's gonna be about 99% 3D-printed! I'll probably just add it to my Shapeways store once the design has been finalized. The body and shoulders are going to be printed stainless steel to mirror these parts being diecast metal in the original toys. The plastic bits will be a mix of high-resolution (but brittle) and super-tough (but low-res) plastics. And finally, since the steel they print is ferromagnetic, the shoulders will be jointed via magnets that I'll supply (the only non-printed parts of the whole rig). Pretty cool shit!

So besides the materials and manufacturing methods, my boot will offer certain advantages people familiar with the originals will definitely appreciate. The first obvious one is that you'll be able to buy as many as you like! The vintage ones are notoriously rare and hyper-expensive (around $200 a whack!). I'm gonna be doing all three styles of the suit, so folks will be able to complete their sets or even army-build and custom-paint for the truly hardcore! But besides that, as I alluded to earlier, the shoulders ARE JOINTED:

Yes, as coveted and beloved as the originals are, it's pretty fucking dumb that the shoulders are static. They look awesome standing at attention on your shelf...but the play value isn't nearly what it coulda been.

Also, I always thought it was kinda wack how their guns were massive, but only fit on their backs. So I went and designed a pretty sweet shoulder bracket to mount the weapons facing forward:
There are other little changes and additions here and there, so for those really interested, check out the blog. I'm also working on a 3D-printed dummy driver...with a twist. It won't be articulated--just a chunk of static plastic--but it'll could be a nice addition for folks who may not have a spare stock driver to fill their suits.

As always, let me know what you think. Thanks!

I missed the first wave of MP-10 that hit the TRU shelves and to be honest I BS'd around hoping I could get one when TRU was offering one of it's $20.00 coupons etc. Now I put one on reserve on the "Let me know" when it comes in section and now it's not listed at all just the MP-skywarp which is clogging up shelves at every TRU I know.

Have I really lost out or do you think it will be re-listed. I know eventually they are just "gone" like Grimlock and Hotrod but I'd hate to think I'm locked to the secondary market.

Also not TRU related unless you count the original Jetfire/Skyfire:

When did TRU started selling $80.00 Robotechs? (online orders only.)

I generally do not collect Transformers. I do collect some Diaclone and Microman robots. The new "unofficial" interpretations of the classic G2 Diaclone TFs interest me, but I know next to nothing about them, as I generally do not follow the TF world of collecting.

I know of TFC and their take on Devastator, er Hercules or whatever, but that is about it. Are there any other small shops that make neat stuff in the same vein? Sorry to ask such a basic question, but TF collecting is kind of new to me.

I'm really trying to be responsible with my TF budget and was wondering what you guys try to set aside for your TF purchase. I was thinking about $50.00 a month but that's just two deluxe models and a voyager class with no consideration to the MP line, 3rd parties or collector items. Then I though 100.00 but that's $1200.00 a year on Transformers and that seems.... stupid. At $50.00 a month I could go 3 months without ordering anything and that $150.00 collector MP item would seem extra special... like a little Christmas. I just don't know...

What about you guys? What's your monthly budget and what are you willing to save up to get? What can afford to run out and get as soon as it comes out?

I was wondering about this because some figures are always left on the pegs and every store seems to keep an abundance of them. Take a toy like the TF Prime Bumble Bee. No matter what store I go to they always seem to have six or seven Bumble Bees on the shelf at any given time. I imagine some go to discount places but what happens to the old stock when they know that noone s buying that figure any more? Do they take the figure and re-paint/re-color them. I can't imagine they just trash them.

Got this from BBTS this morning. I appreciate the gesture from BBTS, but the pricing shift from Takaratomy is pretty whack:

Hi - We've received word from our suppliers in Japan that the MP-13 Soundwave will now include Laserbeak! We have also been told that the Japanese retail price (MSRP) on this figure has gone from 12,000 yen to 15,800 - an increase of about 31% (about $47 US). The wholesale pricing we pay has also gone up that same 31%. We do not take price increases lightly, and we typically absorb small changes in our costs, but with the substantial change in the product through the addition of Laserbeak and the large jump in our cost, we do need to update pricing on all preorders.

The preorder price on the website has been raised to $169.99. For all of you who have already preordered, we will take an extra $10 off that and adjust your preorder price to $159.99. With the addition of Laserbeak, our cost per piece has gone up significantly more than $20, we will pass along only $20 and absorb the rest of the extra cost as a token of goodwill.

We really appreciate your business, and we apologize for the price increase from Takara, but Laserbeak will be a great addition to the MP-13!

Sincerely,
Joel Boblit

[MP] iGear Purple-Nurple Prime (7 replies)

I was waiting to see iGear bust out the Diaclone colored Prime they showed off last year, but that might never happen. So I picked up a Purple-Nurple Prime.

While the color scheme is gloriously garish, the final product reminds me why I sold my original MP Prime years ago. The transformation and parts-fit is too fiddly and the detents on the ratchet joints are too widely spaced to be of much use. It's neither a simple nor special design in a good way. It can barely hold its own gun. Overall, the original design feels like so much less than it could have been. MP Grimlock remains the gold standard of how to not fuck-up a modern update on a classic design.

Specific to iGear, the fact that they simply shrunk the design seemingly without compensating for losses in material thickness means the whole toy is as light as a Gundam model and feels about as durable. Because it's a knock-off, the fit and finish are lacking and generally below what I would expect from a $15 Hasbro mass-market release. One foot on mine was unattached in the box because it has a broken "cup" on the inside where the ankle post is supposed to nest. The faux-hydraulics on the back of each wrist are broken. Several parts were not seated or come off easily, like the gun barrels and the wrist collars. And two pegs on the back of the bumper were so long that they prevented the chest halves from closing when in robot mode; I had to trim them. There is lots of excess flash on various pieces. The paint is shitty, with both overspray and chips. And the bonus Megatron head is so lacking in detail that it is a barely discernible lump of gray plastic. I’ve contacted iGear about getting a replacement foot and wrist hinges, so we’ll see what they say.

Overall, for around $70 you get an almost finished, model-quality toy of a Transformer that has lots of bugs in the design. At first I was a little pissed off about the value, but I felt better when I reflected on the utter piece of shit that was Hasbro’s MP Rodimus Jocksnuffer. For around the same price (not to mention free international delivery!) I got a more handsome, if not equally buggy, toy with more cool shit included. And that’s not bad. One day I will bust out the craft supplies and finish the toy off the way it should be.

I don’t know if the same can be said of all the iGear Faith Leaders, but I’m basically happy with this one. Here's some other dood's review of the same toy and he's cool with it. You might be, too.

SOUNDWAVE: Hasbro Kicks Takara in Teh Ballz for Once (10 replies)

I hadn’t paid attention to Transformers for a while, and then I picked up was Soundwave from the TF Prime cartoon. Specifically, the Hasbro version. It’s a cool toy for the price and satisfied me well.

Then I preordered the Takara version because of the cool looking scorpion gun it comes with. When it finally arrived, I was crushed under the weight of my disappointment. It sucks in every possible comparison, even to the point of ruining an otherwise awesome toy. Here’s a review with lots of pictures (note that the lower legs are mistransformed because they’re so rubbery that it’s the only way the figure will stand). Here’s a summary of why it sucks:

- The packaging is ridiculously oversized.
- The sculpt has been modified with bulky 5mm ports.
- The ports correspond to a goofy-assed combining weapon gimmick.
- The goofy assed weapon gimmick is a do-it-yourself model kit.
- The paint applications have been reduced in favor of supplying a worthless sticker sheet instead.
- Much of the plastic is ultra-gummy, holds less detail, and sports more mold-lines.
- At least for Soundwave, the gimmick weapon cannot be fitted in vehicle mode without misaligning the barrel.

All of these “features”, and at only double the price! Oh, when did the tables turn so cruelly on the Great Import Divide of Quality?

I have no idea if this is related or not, but the highly conspicuous copyright info on the figure reads “Hasbro SA” as in “Hasbro Sweden”. Is that why it sucks? Was it made for the widest possible international market as opposed to just Japan?
