Google translation.

So you can't be sure if a comment was a lunatic non-sequitur made by someone with cafeine-fueled sleep deprivation who has been gaming for two days straight or just Google's lousy translation?

Google translation is totally unreliable when it comes to very specific topics because of its statistical matching. It doesn't literally translate words and phrases, except in some limited cases - it just matches them to commonly occurring patterns using the same words and phrases. The more often a phrase is used, and the more people submit corrections to translations of it, the more accurate Google translation is. I've noticed some pretty bad examples recently of Google making statistically-based translation matches that were totally incorrect - if I remember one, and it's still happening, I'll post about it.

Oh, here's an excellent example! Try the hiragana sequence "gurashi" in Google translate (click here for this example). At this time I am making this post, it's translated as "Arrietty", because recently that string of hiragana has most commonly been used in the Japanese title of Studio Ghibli's film Kari-gurashi no Arrietty. Never mind that those characters don't spell out that character's name, and are in fact a totally different part of the title - such fine distinctions are beyond Google Translate's automated system.

If you had the only response....does that mean you're the only person who cares?

>If you had the only response....does that mean you're the only person who cares?

No, it means I was the only one who wasn't chicken enough to not respond because too many fans of moe tend to hide in the corner because they know the backlash it gets, especially on ANN.

No the reason it's. Crap is because our favorite genre will never grow up :v

Sturgeons law is a myth.

You think it's crap, to me it's legitimately gold. I tend to watch 3-5 new anime shows a season plus what's on my backlog (which can be anything from old OVA's to a show from last season I'd miss).

The point is, if you find everything now to be crap then your vote doesn't matter because you're not the market they're after.

You should check spelling and grammar on pieces you submit to a website, dude.

"Generally, I find "pandering" to be a buzzword the anime fan likes to use to describe anime they they themselves don't like just so they can pretend to be intellectually smarter than they really are."

Yes, that probably explains why some mecha fans describe anime with detailed mechanics as "pandering" to their tastes.

Let's extend that to politics and show why it is wrong:

"You don't agree with our policy that all women should bare their breasts at complete strangers on the street twice a day and dare think it's misogynistic? You FUCKER, you're a less-than-nothing who wastes Corporation XYZ's time and money! No more vote for you!"
(and it goes without saying that some time later some men in black suits take away the person for some "private schooling"...)

Every single country would be a single-party corporate dictature that would put anyone who doesn't agree with THE PARTY down the crapper. Absolutely awesome dystopia.

...although, now that I think of it, it would also be a good plot for a satiric anime pandering to multiple audiences on multiple levels.... :P

It's called an analogy.

But anyway, screw this. Anytime people point out that you use double standards, ignorance instead of facts, and strawmans in your argumentation against "people who are not into mainstream (sic) anime", you wave it away by saying we're wrong. You are about as bad as those inane religious fundamentalists (minus the killing of unbelievers).

So there is no such thing as quality? No means to evaluate whether something has creative merit? There is nothing that can be said about a creative work except "I like it" or "I don't like it"? Is that what you believe? If that's so, then you have no stake in discussions of the merits of art or entertainment, because you consider the discussion invalid. You're like a Ron Paul of criticism, trying to muscle your way into the debate just so you can argue that it should all be torn down and thrown away.

No. I have my own merits of what's good or not but it's certainly not the notion "this show is bad because it has ecchi or moe". Like for example, I dropped Mysterious Girlfriend X after two eps but not because of the premise, it just wasn't entertaining me in general. Meanwhile me and my otaku posse are enjoying Upotte!!.

Despite what you're probably thinking, I don't just mindlessly gorge myself on every show that comes out. But I refuse to be one of those guys that can''t get past any anime made after 1995.

Okay, but this isn't really the position you're arguing against, at least not here on TBDX. I mean, VF5SS complains about those guys CONSTANTLY.

But I do have backing from the gaijin butai :3

Not as scary as the anime critic who killed his family, but this "clearly disturbed 20-year-old male" Anime Boston attendee, who was “kicking and punching EMTs" when emergency services reported to a rowdy party at the convention, may have earned himself a place among the World's Scariest Otaku.

this poll is relevant to the interests of this thread.

Biglobe polls are rarely relevent to anything (except of course tabloid sites and blogs wanting to post something to drive commentary and linking for ad revenue).

This poll is a good example. First, in order to participate in the poll you must self identify as a "most desperate fan" in the first place, or you can just troll it like they do all the other polls--just who exactly weighed in?

Hell if we'll ever know. The main demographic of those polled by Biglobe suggests that it is largely younger/newer folks too, so the older types more typically identified with the "desperate/creepy otaku" demographic tend to get outvoiced on most topics, even ones that are supposed to be about the best/worst *** of "all time" or such and usually the collective whole wind up demonstrating the memory span of an oxygen-starved goldfish with ADD.

Secondly, the results are also completely meaningless--a significant percentage of characters come from popular, well liked series, some cross-demographic. There's farless moe-fan-bait than one might expect, but is this a mark of improved taste, of a skewed poll, cross appeal, trolls or what? Good luck trying to sort that out!

Yeah, the only things good about that one is the GITD parts and the squid ink vomit (did I just write that?). :D

<_<

If simply liking Ika Musume stuff makes one scary, I don't want to be normal...de geso~! DX

How about this fellow (who, like an otaku version of Poe's Law, I almost can't tell if he's for real or just a parody...reading his multi-part bio though in his earlier posts indicates he's at least mostly for real):

[animediet.net]

(not so much the most recent posts, dig back a little and you'll see...)

...yeah. I like some of Anime Diet as a magazine-format blog, but LaMoe's posts are downright bizarre.

Oh speaking of scary, some folks were bemused by mention of this series earlier (review from same blog, different author):

[animediet.net]

...

......

What? Oh come on, I'm not THAT scary...!
