Well, yes, but I think a lot of what we do through impersonal communications methods is for emotional support. Even if it's just seeking out people we can identify with on the internet, for assurance that our own hobbies and fan behaviors are acceptable :3

Actually, in some cases you only have to pretend being a shy female to get the gifts free of charge, no convincing needed. In an online (text-only) game I had two characters, one male, one female, both not interested in online sex (I prefer to level grind my characters into sharply defined niches of skills). The male character got blatantly hit on by an obvious GIRL in the most explicit of terms - as used in bad lemon fanfic (ignoring hir worked). The female character, whose character design I had specifically described as not being the typical GIRL character (so insteads of big boobs and skimpy clothing, my character was a tomboyish wizard), got a different kind of attention. She got loaded with free gifts by a fellow low-level male character who couldn't be told off at all without straying out-of-character. It was so bad he spent all his money earned in-game (hours of actual playtime at that level) on expensive gifts for my female character. Despite getting zero positive romantic feedback.
At the time, it felt like prime sexual harassment because I could not bring myself to tell him to sod off. In hindsight, in a way it is a very sad (and hilarious) thing that the guy apparently had such a need for romantic attention that he went to great lengths to romance a character who was not at all interested in such things and never ever showed an ounce of attention to him besides "Thank you". He never ever got a clue.

Well, yeah, but we will only reach the same level of support once we start talking about one's hairy <insert minor body part here> in deterring making eye contact with the other sex. ;)

You know, at first I was surprised by this story. Then I thought of the otaku out there holding birthday parties (with real cake) for the fictional girls from Love Plus, and, by comparison, giving imaginary things to a player character is not quite as strange as buying real things in an imaginary interaction with a non-player character.
