B00 builds a joystick. A pop-up adventure.

I got inspired to build my own arcade style joystick. It's nice to have for arcade fighters, emulators, xbox live an what not.

The I used a modified xbox controller and a dedicated PS3 circuit board. This wire mess lets the joystick work on Xbox, PS3, and PC.

The whole mess only needs one USB cord for all 3 system.

My wood working skills aren't so great.

But that's what vinyl lament is for!

A shot of the hooked up interior. So many wires...

Remarkably the whole damn thing works great!

Am I reading TBDX, or Popular Mechanics? ;p
This is really cool BOO! Eggcellent job.
Nice work with the wiring loops. All looks pretty serviceable.
Do you set it up on a little table to play?

bad-ass! - I'm not even a vg fan and I'm both impressed and amused. Good job despite the vinyl lament.

Without 'select' and 'start' buttons you're never going survive Contra.

I set it on my coffee table or my lap.

Not to worry, those little buttons on the back are Start, Select, and guide.

Looks nice.

Are those happ buttons and sticks? I was considering doing this but I just ended up buying a mid priced hori one.
B00
The buttons are Happ, but the joystick is made by IL. At one time the Happ competition stick and the IL "euro-stick" were one in the same. Happ bought them from IL, then resold them in the US. Recently Happ switched to getting their own competition sticks made in china, and the quality took a dive. The IL "euro-sticks" are still just as nice as the old competition stick.

I just got in the arcade hardware for my second cabinet.

There's still some parts I need to finish the second one. I'm just waiting patiently for them to come back in stock. But I went ahead and setup the ground loop, and the input contacts for the hardware.

I'm making a better effort too keep the interior organized.

Very awesome. I'd like to see one of these with a nice varnish and brass sticks/buttons, with some vacuum tubes that do nothing.

I finally got my plastic PCB stands in the mail today. I've been waiting weeks for these to arrive from Hong Kong. Man are they worth it. I had my doubts that plastic screws would hold well, but they do.

The Xbox circuit board is very secure.

The wiring may still not be the greatest, but it's a hell of a lot cleaner than the first stick.

I temporary reconnected the game pad cable so I could at least test the xbox hardware. It all worked perfectly.

I'm still waiting on this little bastard to come back in stock so I can finish this stick off and start the next two.

So whats the purpose of plastic screws? Reduce weight?
can you use it to do a haoshokoken

They're non-conductive, so there's no chance they will interfere with the circuit.

Yes, or a Shinkuhadoken!

Just finished the construction and vinyl apps for cabinets 3 and 4. Now I just need some hardware. Too bad there are horrible back-orders on everything right now.

if I could afford it, I would commission a Crystal Castles setup (ball and button)

Nice job, man. They look very slick, and much more solid than the SFIV Fight Stick at the edge of the piccy. I have small hands, so the fight stick is good for me, but all my friends are always complaining about feeling 'cramped' on it and wanting a bigger, more stable thing like it looks like you made.

So... do you play BlazBlue? I've been looking for opponents for ages, but no luck. Alas, I am no Street Fighter player, although getting to play as Poison in the upcoming SF x Tekken might pull me in.

Um, also... I've been thinking about similarly building myself a multi-platform-compatible stick for ages, but price keeps deterring me. If you don't mind sharing, about how much did the PCBs for that run you?

I have both madcatz fightsticks, a TE and a SE. Both are nice but like you say the joystick is a bit close to the buttons.

As for Multi console PCB there's only one that works without needed to be modded. The Joytron Revolution board. I'm going to pick one of these up at some point but for now my sticks are dual modded with a Xbox After Glow controller PCB (around $30 found in just about any store) and a second PCB made for dual modding, the toddles Chimp. The total cost of my PCB's is around $65 mark, and then you have to solder a TON of crap together and hope it works. The Joytron PCB looks to be a good solution. No modding needed, no super mess of wire between two boards, but there is some soldering that will need to be done to connect the PCB to the arcade hardware.

Sorry, I'm not into BlazBlue. Mostly Street Fighter and capcom fighters anymore. But I also play a ton of retro arcade games.

4 player Ninjas Turtles anyone?

One of the buttons on the orange stick got a little off center, but it still plays fine.
