Indeed the glossiness is vintage. Now the crappy thing is, depending on how the figures were stored and where, the paint would sometimes develop mold.

Yep, the big one. The $19.99 one. The one with lights and sound and OH GOD I'M AN IDIOT WHY DIDN'T I BUY IT BOO HOO HOO HOOO!
The smaller sword and claw are in the spirit of the Yutaka (Bandai) 'cheap toy' versions of various Super Sentai Role Play toys. Overpriced and utterly useless.
And there BETTER be a toy version of the Mumm-Ra Tank.

I am so damn weak.
I went back to TrU Sunday. I had thoughts that if the Sword was still there I would buy it because it was meant to be.
It was there. I bought it.
It's not too bad. Nice lights and sound (altho the Eye doesn't seem to light during the 'sight beyond sight' play, only the Thundercats mark), the blade isn't spring loaded so you have to swing it for it to extend but the 'wings' on the hilt do pop out smartly when you press the correct button.
Construction...eh. Could have been a little tighter, a bit more precise but overall acceptable. paint, well, it's painted. Not as important as on a figure, right?
Will say this. Anyone thinking they're going to do spinny flippy sword kata with this is in for suffering, the balance is HORRIBLE.
Is it worth $19.99? yeaaaah, OK, yeah. I think $14.99 would be more in line but this day and age, yeah, I think a kid would probably get $20 worth of play.

I was going to cave and pick up a Lion-O just to be able to say once and for all that I did or did not like the toy. The Walmarts and Toys R Us in the area have the figures now, but none had a Lion-O. There are Tigras in abundance. Never did care for Tigra, I guess I'll just have to keep checking. I'd be a lot more interested if there was a "Classics" Mumm-Ra or a figure of that lizard guy who was his crony.

No kidding. I mean, seriously, man--a division of Thundertanks mounting a city assault, a school of Makos (from Tigersharks), and Mumm-Ra and Mon-Star in the same scene...this is like the best kind of fanservice...the non-pervy kind.
The Classics line, according to scuttlebutt, will go on to include 8 figs a year. Assuming the line goes further, if it doesn't include some Tigersharks and Silverhawks, it'll be a little disappointing.

And faceplates. Definitely faceplates. The best part of the character designs and they weren't even included on any of the toys (except for the rare Ultrasonic Quicksilver and the less rare Ultrasonic Steelwill).

Yeah the inclusion of Silverhawks would indeed be awesome. As the line goes forward I would like to see the materials in used for the accessories improve. I mean floppy rubbery plastic is great for Tygra's whip....not so much for Lion-O's sword...I have yet to find a way to pose him with it in hand where it doesn't start to "melt" after a couple of days....

So I just learned that Karl "genocidalpenguin" Östlund, a prolific mecha artist who's been putting out fantastic original designs for years, worked on the new Thundercats show. He posts his original design for a lizardman mech here:
[vulnepro.blogspot.com]
along with a screencap of the revised design used in the animation.
I hear he did some other designs, including Mumm-Ra's tank and other ships/mecha. We should let him know we appreciate the post, and hopefully he'll post whatever other Thundercats designs he's allowed to :j

I am here to report my repentance. I picked up Classics Lion-O and Tygra and am suitably impressed with the overall toy-ness of these. Yes, paint apps are a bit of a problem here and there. Wish that wrist connectors were in the same color as the hand/arm surrounding them. Posibility is great, though, and they certainly evoke the qualities of the characters. Non-rubber swords would have been a nice touch though...

He already had the lead in two hour long furry-porno adaptation. Which, despite being tastefully lit and shot, was utterly lacking in character development.

Definitely putting the "Rum" in the "Rum-Tum-Tiger"...
Okay, that's from Cats, the musical, which I only saw the one song on MTV of all places back in the 80's...and obviously Lion-O is a lion, not a TIGER, so I'm sorrrrry for any confusion this post might unintentionally cause.
That's not Lou at Comicon after the Hulk Q & A, is it?

So apparently, Bandai is down-scaling its Classics line after a whopping two figures: [www.bigbadtoystore.com]
WTF?
A tad annoying, I have to say. The first two figs were great, but now, they'll probably end up on eBay if Bandai's going to commit to this smaller line. Hopefully, this Lion-O will have a less flaccid sword.

Nope, they confirmed the death of the 8 inch line and are now doing classics at 6 inches. And look, 6 inch Lion-o has a (crappy) roaring face.

Wait--so this shit hasn't been cancelled???
What the fuck. I just checked wikipedia, and it looks like there've been a few new episodes since the big initial push crashed and burned.
I like to think I watch a decent amount of Cartoon Network, and I haven't heard JACK SHIT about this show since the duelist episode back in early September. I just assumed they canned it...and I figured they'd've pulled the plug on the toys, too...

No that's just cartoon network's way of releasing shows. Bring out a couple of episodes with a bunch of promotion, then go into repeats for a month or two to kill momentum. You mean you missed the Berbil episode?

Well, you're right, it is and this is the shame of Cartoon Network.
Oh, they'll promote the living f**k out of Clone Wars and whatever new 'ugly crap' show they throw on but Thundercats? Eh, so what big deal.
And I think it's probably the best, most entertaining show I've seen in some time. I love how they're taking elements from the past and just changing them up in a way that makes them interesting.
Somehow we're all supposed to 'just know' that there's new Tcats running, that Batman: The Brave and the Bold is ending on what looks like a bats**t insane episode (Ambush Bug!!!) and The Forever People made a guest spot on Young Justice (!!!), but man, don't forget there's a 4-episode story arc on Clone Wars!
crap. What, is Mattycollector running programming and promotion for Cartoon Network?

You know, all of this new stuff looks pretty cool...I even kind of like the armor. Adam Pawlus over at 16bit had a little blurb that states that the 8" line will continue in a limited edition sort of way, for what that is worth...I wonder if they are going the Mattycollector route on these things...?

Not just the Forever People. Don't forget about the Infinity Man turned into a giant mecha! I don't understand why some hate Young Justice, it's been great.
Also off topic but my last few orders from Matty Collector have been relatively pain free (besides the shipping fiasco)

Anyone catch the "Astral Plane" episode from last week(?)?. Awesome. And poor, poor Panthro. Can't catch a break.
Just an aside, but are "nunchucks" still cool now that the 80s have passed? In the Grune vs. Panthro fight I couldn't help but feel like they were perhaps the shittiest weapon they could have stuck him with. Ugh.

I dunno his nunchakus were pretty cool, but the current version doesn't seem to do much... Can they even shoot?
Thundertank is half off (15 bucks) at amazon. You know you'll want one later to pair with mummra tank. The little figures look like the typical crappy small scale bandai figures though.
