[TRON] Oh...my

Posted by replicantgirl
Well, define "suck." If you think it's going to be a solid sequel that expounds on and complements the original movie, don't get your hopes up. That might happen, but it's more likely that it's going to be a G-rated kiddy fest with variations on the old stuff you remember as window dressing. After all, there are toys to be sold and seats to fill, and The Mouse hungers...

The previews are definitely not aimed at younger kids. They're going for the teenage action crowd, 80's pop culture junkies, and geeks.
But it's too early to tell. I'm not getting my hopes up beyond it "looking" good.

Yeah that's about right...

oxymoronic

Well, the bright side is, that the original Tron had enough shortcomings/flaws that it shouldn't be hard to "improve" on it... kind of like how "Wrath of Khan" improved on "The Motionless Picture"? Or more appropriately, how "Return to Witch Mountain" improved on "Escape to Witch Mountain".
Maybe in the sequel the MPC has been confined to a Tamagochi.

I don't think anyone is expecting anything. I mean, it is Tron. Is there someone out there other than the Tron guy who is actually basing any sort of emotional well being or expecting earth shatteringly good plot devices ? I doubt it.
I didn't make the IMAX preview tonight, so no snotty judgements yet. Anyone get to it?

Thanks for the reminder about the TANK! Yes, the classic needs toy form. I think the new styled tank is in the diecast line now.

As to the reissue figures, can't comment, cuz they look fine sealed in the bubble cards. ;p

Pretty accurate for me. Well, I'm expecting to be disappointed. That, in itself, will help me to like it better (I hope).

I remember the first one looking great and being kinda dull - but I've always liked the basic story idea. I just wish some'd do it right.

Terry Gilliam?

How about Christopher Nolan?

I dunno. Something about the way I think of "Tron" would make it a far better Gilliam than Nolan picture. Nolan's too sleek, somehow, for the concept. Plus he appears to have no sense of humor. This just feels more like a Gilliam project to me (you know: doomed from the outset)

So, are you saying Tron needs more midgets?
cae
YES!

Oh great, another collector's trend in the works... Mickey Tron, Beast Tron, Uncle Remus Tron...

Reminds me... I was at Disneyland last week and now they have an ENTIRE gift shop devoted to those designer vinyl Mickey collectibles...
cae

I can't wait for Tron Tron.

WTF would that look like?

Wouldn't that be Urban Vinyl?

Oh you mean disjointed, rambling, and slightly annoying? ; )
(12 Monkeys, Fear and Loathing...)

Funny that you say Nolan's style would be TOO SLICK for Tron! At least visually, the whole original movie is very "slick"!

Heh - these are two projects of Gilliam's I quite like (though it took me more than one viewing to appreciate F&LiLV) ... 12 Monkeys is a particular favorite. If you want me to groan over Gilliam you shoulda said "Brother's Grimm" or "Tideland" ... =D

> Funny that you say Nolan's style would be TOO SLICK for Tron!

I actually think Nolan's style is too slick for virtually everything he does. "Memento" being the only exception.

I like his work, I just think it's ... cold for the most part.

I appreciate Gilliam's visuals, but in terms of the stories, his movies never seem to come together for me, with the execption of "Time Bandits." That being said, I haven't seen them all.
Guillermo Del Toro's TRON. Or maybe Ridley Scott.

Tron? I really liked the original - it appealed to my design sensibilities at the time, and ideas about a simulated world and whether the denizens could discover anything about the nature of their simulation. Plus I was *really* interested in computer graphics. Put it this way - I could sit and watch Robert Abel and Associates's 7-up and Levi's commercials over and over.

The Black Hole, however, I couldn't stand. I may have to watch that again to make sure it wasn't good in a way that my younger self missed,

I'm looking forward to seeing Legacy. I won't be heart broken if it's not great - should be fun to watch either way.

I thought Brazil was good.
cae
Yeah, I liked "Brazil" (and still do) a lot but ... don't like "Time Bandits" and never really did. How's that for heresy?

Time Bandits is a great movie. Tron looks like it will be a good movie, hopefully it won't be one and done. TRON II and TRON III let me throw those ideas out in the universe.

You mean, Tron III and Tron IV? This upcoming Tron is technically "Tron II"...
Tron
Tron: Legacy
Tron: Redemption
Tron: Regurgitation

I'm waiting for Tron Jeremy.

Dicks of Tron

Damn: Corey beat me to it.

I just hope that Bit makes a reappearance in the new film. What a pathetic sidekick.
I tell 'ya, I still have my Tron army from childhood. 20-odd figures and a pair of cycles. My neighborhood friends and I used to lament the lack of Tank, MCP, and Solar Sailer toys. Someone made a recognizer from cardboard, from which we immediately tore its legs and tossed it off our dirt-cum-digital canyon in the backyard....

SARK IS MY MOJO
Tron Jeremy = classic

Well...here they are:

Saw this in IMAX 3D last night.

Stunningly beautiful. So what if the plot made little sense. That's not why I was there.

Honestly, better than I expected. Best 3D I have seen yet.

Get your hopes up. It did happen. I loved Loved LOVED it.

Happy holidays, Ken-A

Regan and waiting patiently for me to come home Sunday so we can go see it.

I have little expectation other than seeing Olivia Wild in a latex suit in 3d.

They should combine that with Black Swan.

"Tron Swan", would be filled with lghtcycles and hot women.
I just want to know if this guy likes the movie. Because he's my gold standard. Pic courtesy of Camel-Toe Centerfolds.
