Restoring Vintage Tin Toys

Posted by gaiking123
I see quite a few rusty loose tin toys on YHJ. Is there a way to restore the figure if it's rusty? Just curious cause I almost bought a few rusty tin figures but passed on it.

I wouldn't try it yourself. Its too complicated a process. You can send the toy to a professional restorer.

There are different degrees of rust, but mainly for an old tin, unless your comfortable with it as is, there is not a lot you can do. Its a costly and time consuming way to restore, and to be honest the cost of it offsets just holding out for a better conditioned one.

Just my opinion.
Makes sense, I guess for me it depends on the rarity of the item. If it is something that has not shown up for 10 years, I probably would get rusty version.

Speaking of rare, I see there was a Daidenjin Popy tin loose in good condition on YHJ. Did you get that?
No. It did not have a box. But it went cheap.
It was nice but yes no box. So are you only getting stuff now that comes with a box? Box still has to be C9 or better?

Was almost going to make a bid for it but I wanted to get all the battery stuff out of the way first and I didn't want the chance of bidding against you. :)

I'm getting sort of a handle on how much value these are just by looking at Yahoo Japan.

Looks like the Jeeg gets the least. Other lower ones are Gaiking, both Getter 1 and Getter G Dragon also sell for lower. Mach Baron is in the middle. That Kamen Rider is at the top. Still haven't seen Ace in YHJ except for the one you got from Morphys.

I also saw one of the gang of five robots, rusty and loose go for thousands. Guess someone really wanted it.
The only way we've ever successfully 'restored' any of my dad's vintage tin litho'd train accessories was to replace the parts... Like Josh said, once a part is rusty that's real tough to clean up. Trying to repaint any tin parts would be a bear as well... I don't know if you'd ever be able to match a litho'd deco (but, I don't think alot of the tin robots were litho'd).

So, these are "rare" toys right? If so, can you please post the auction links?

Thanks!!!

Hah...well I would love to say that, but finding a tin box in c9 shape is generally much harder. At least the Popy ones are. The two piece Bullmark box is much higher quality of construction than a single piece Popy one. I tend to look for the best conditioned box possible which makes my collection slow going.

I will tell you what, lets just tell one another if we are interested in a tin, and we can then work it out that way. I think we have slightly different focuses so its not going to be much of an issue, but thanks. I do appreciate the sentiment.

Yeah they tend to have quite a few. I find they go for higher prices than Ebay for the most part. You can't count seller prices from Auctionfiesta or whatever his name is now...those never sell.

You are right. I did see an Ace recently sell on YJ JApan for cheap . It went for 65,000 which is about what I paid. I still think they are worth over 1k generally. A Barom 1 that was also up there went for only 56,000 near mint in a beat box. Considering they generally hit 1-1200 loose says most people missed it. But it went to a good home. He knows who he is. ;-)

Which one? I actually saw a very rare Gang Of five'
-like robot go for about 2000 usd in complete rusted out condition. A pretty high end US collector/dealer bought it, but it was either a very rare, or protype tin that I have never seen before. I can forward you the link.

It does look that way. I can tell it looks like any window boxed Popy ones, The cellophane looks wrinkled or sometimes torn. I'm curious, what was the condition of the box from the Ace you bought from Morphy?

Cool. We both kind of know what we are interested in. I'll send you a PM if I want to bid on something you may be interested in. If you can do the same, that would be great. No sense in a bidding war between the 2 of us. Thank God it's not something more people on this board are interested in like Jumbos or those pesky but collectible missile firing vinyls.

The funny thing is, he still has stuff listed on Ebay that have been long gone from YHJ for months now. That loose Ultraman 16" tin is still in his store but I have not seen it on YHJ for awhile. You can see by his negative feedback, people winning stuff and not getting it cause I don't think he even keeps track of what isn't listed on YHJ any longer.

You have a link to both those? I'd like to take a look at the condition of each. Ace is probably the only tin walker that isn't battery operated that I'd want now.

This is what I'm talking about.

Same thing? Kind of weird the arms and head are white. The one from Morphys was all purple. Sun bleach or a variation like that orange headed Bazoler. :) If not the same, what is the link?

Also, I see a rusty 16" Ultraman Jack without battery cover, 1 eye missing, chest light missing sold for over $350+ Decent price, no?

I don't know how rare these are but I am sort of using what these went for to somewhat gage how much tin toys are going for. Most of the ones I mentioned, the photos have been taken down. Here are some that still are up.

I opened up one of the loose Bullmark Ultraman tins I purchased awhile back and noticed the wires are rusty. I guess this is never going to walk again, is he? Anyone try to fix anything battery operated w rusty wires before?
