such a cool toy, and im glad to hear you got a great deal on it.
yeah, i love it, though on mine the left arm is noticeably longer than the right, is that a common thing with these?

Oh, the jokes we could come up with that one...!

Well, you're half right -- it is shit!

Old Victora "mechanic" toy from the same series that includes Gavan and Goggle V. UBER cheap. The mechanics are printed on a piece of paper inside the body.

well then if they're considered mere "shit" I'd be more than happy to take them off your hands...
Still want.
MattAlt (Admin)
Not mine. And quite hard to find (one of those "nobody cares about them" rather than "they're rare" kinds of things. They're great in their own way: just didn't want you to get your hopes up. Quality-wise they just don't stack up to the Clover mechanic stuff.

Here's the box, by the way. I always have an eye out for these and will let you guys know if I ever find extras.

Oh wow -- I had no idea they made a Grendizer "puzzle toy"!! I have the Great Mazinger. Wonder if there are any other robots in the series?

Just think: if we extract the vintage Seventies air trapped inside those bubbles, maybe we can re-create the Showa era, like Jurassic Park:

1968 Bulova Accutron Spaceview. Was my father's when I was a kid. He gave it to me last year. Perhaps this is where the translucent fascination originates...?

Man, had I been looking for this for a long time. It isn't particularly rare, but was only sold through Hyper Hobby and wasn't produced in huge numbers. The thing that saves it from being a mindless translucent re-color is the head, which features all-new, Henshin Cyborg style chrome detail.

Matthewalt "I actually kinda LIKE that approach! You know: let's make a TOY. Remember those? Products designed to be played with without breaking? DO YOU REMEMBER, LOVE?!"
MattAlt (Admin)
I am seriously thinking to customize some chrome inserts; it's a really easy to disassemble toy. Maybe replicate this classic shot?
hmmmm, ya know, get yourself a few beater RC cars and some motorcycle model kits, a little kit bashing and some silver spray paint.....
The head's interior was designed originally by my old friend Reiji (no relation) Matsumoto for his 3D cross-section poster sold at WonderFestival of Robotman (based directly in turn on the vintage manga cross-section view drawn by the late Moritou-sensei)--his CG model was used as reference for the sculpt. You can see it here clearly along with a fully stripped version and a cross-section of Giant Acroyear (I have all three of the posters :D) [spline.oc.to]

*Edit: hm, the stripped view version isn't on that page. Can't seem to find it at the moment. But the other ones are all there. Giant Acroyear is particularly awesome. Reiji put a lot of work into getting all of the details from Moritou's illustrations just right.*

There were some awesome paper-inserts for this someone designed back when it was released that was similar to Nekosaur, but I haven't been able to find the pics of those again, unfortunately. I should see if I can get back in touch with Reiji and see if he knows (if I owned one, I'd have made more an effort to get them, d'oh).

Hey Matt, do you have the clear "schematic view" Yamato?

Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 10/02/2011 12:36AM by microbry.
MattAlt (Admin)
Bry, thanks so much for the detailed info. Reiji's cutaway views are beautiful. Would love to see those inserts! Please keep us posted.

By schematic view Yamato, you mean that candy-toy version that came out a few years back? I don't, actually.

Meine gott in himmel, Matt, I've wanted one of those, like forever.

Man, you just re-opened a can of JAWNZ on me - I would love to get this, those inserts, a classic clothed Akira figure, and the custom articulation kit that adds knee and thigh movement. ROBOTMAN LOVE.

edit:
Yeah, thx microbry, love getting info like that!!

That thing is absolutely stunning!
There were 3 Robotman repros - standard, crystal, and the black and chrome SAS version (personally my favorite). Matt is right that the redesigned head saves the crystal Robotman from being another "mindless re-color," but for traditionalists, the mindless version was also made available. I recall seeing a crystal smoke version as well, but I might just be getting old....anybody?

I wonder if these are the inserts Bry is talking about?

The only official color variations I'm aware of are the translucent, "normal," and black ones (which you can see grouped together at this pic from the 2001 Tokyo Toy Show) but I know there are a bunch of weird test-shots floating around, like this green one that surfaced at the 2001 SuperFest right before the reissues debuted. (Hard to believe it's been ten years already...!)

Yeah, this one: [visibleinnards.org]

I got one a few years back and am putting it together. It's absolutely amazing, every little subsection comes apart to reveal further interior detail, including the various fighters and craft (like the "seamless" one), and there's even tiny details inside the bridge (though hard to make out in the clear plastic). I'll try to get some pics later that go further than the ones in that link above. :)

I don't think there was a crystal smoke. Reiji organized a set of made-to-order fully chromed "Hyperdrive Robotman" for interested folks that included some cool papercraft extras...not exactly official, but a nice variant that was well-received by the fans.

Ah, I believe so--I think I misremembered it as being more than just the legs and batteries, but I've followed Stargazer's site over the years and that's most likely the one I saw. It would be cool to do more inserts for the rest of him. :D I really need to get one myself someday.

Wow, I'd forgotten about the weird test shot ones. Nice!

We're violating the "only translucent toy talk" rule of this thread, but the Hyperdrive Robotman is so cool I feel the need to post:
