The Bigger O

Posted by Fort Max
Round two for Big O fans, hopefully without any BS this time!

30cm tall, diecast and articulated fingers, this could destroy the SOC.

[hk.myblog.yahoo.com]

*Pretty sure the SOC is smaller then 30cm, if not then, yeah, thread title fail.

Cool news. Yes 30cm is just over 11 3/4" tall, so yeah, bigger than SOC.

At first, the convention pictures didn't show the door outline on the foot.
Now, in the unpainted shot above, it's clearly visible. There better be.
I never bought one of the SOCs, so this is interesting.
Max Factory does quality, so it should be a solid - if not absurdly expensive - release. But how awesome will it be? The SOC was, as far as SOCs go, good stuff. But the add-on web exclusive set was a shady ploy to make you buy the lame cake decorators in order to get the goodies you really wanted like the limo, hands, and chains. Beyond making you buy a larger figure with everything included from the outset I can't see how the MF version will be a big deal.

Instead of going larger, I'd like to see Bandai roll our a Super Robot Chogokin Big-O. They could just shrink down the SOC and remove the useless piston gimmicks. That's be nice.

Rocket anchors, chest cannons and light up eyes/crown? revealed.

Holy hell. 39,800 yen.
Hah. You'd sure have to like the character for that. Anyway, not that far off from some of CM's or Yamato's releases.

More serious than thou
where do you see the price?

It's not in the pictures currently linked in the thread, but supposedly it's from the latest Hobby Japan:

Thanks, wow I think I'll stick with my SOC version.
So, for $400, that's pretty much a wrap, right?

Do your math, son....that's more like $485! Still, for some reason that doesn't sound overboard considering it's almost a foot tall of diecast.

I actually had the Max Factory sofubi (prepainted kit) this toy appears to be based on. 30cm...identical proportions...gorgeous. Wish I still had that thing. He was a casualty of war back when my place was a constant battlefield (when a particularly feisty ex was living with me)!

Anyway, that's a lotta cheddar...but I'm guessing the quality will be as nice as one could hope for, and it'll be one heavy bastard. Likely only for the most diehard fans.
Missed the part where it's a foot tall. Now it's enormous and unbuyable.

It is about the same price as the Marmit Diecast 1 foot tall Mazingers. I think it is worth the price.

Time to get out your bigger wallet, also I wouldn't be surprised if this was lacking in the diecast department.
I'd love to take a look at one of these. Love the robot character.
It's one of those cases, where usually, we whine about the new toy being expensive enough to buy a vintage one...only, as vintage-y as Big O looks, there isn't a vintage option. So this looks to be the definitive toy version.
You can pre-order one on Amazon Japan. If you live in Japan.

That's a lot of loot. Not that I can't afford it.
put in my pre-order at my usual online store, got 9000 yen off.
where is this usual store?
I wasn't expecting it to be cheap but 300 quid is staggering, and it only just out gimmicks Bandai's. It adds rocket anchors, the car and light up eyes but loses the chest missiles. If it had the missiles, the arm cannons and some parts to do the final stage it'd be worth it to me.
I'll just have to keep on futilely wishing for Bandai to do the decent thing and reissue their Big O in a giftset with all the extra parts.
you are paying for size. and size matters.
If you have Big-O, you have to get this too:

Ditka Dances is helpful, isn't he...? Try Hobby Search or Ami Ami, sir...they usually offer any stuff at 20% off due to the poor exchange rates between the USD and JPY.

G'luck!

don't forget some big vinyl

[mecha-guy.blogspot.com]
OOOOOooo those vinyls are beautiful!
Yes Ditka Dance is extremely helpful.
Shit, 2800Y each for the sofubi! Are they a foot tall like the Big O? For that cheap, I can gladly find space and cash to support robot vinyl.

That doesn't sound right. The original 300mm Big O vinyl retailed for something like 8800 yen, iirc.
What 'chu smokin' Phyllis?

The trade show pics of DUO and FAU, going around are a little blurry on the name taggie things, but that's 12800Y. ....I would assume, for each, not der pair, but that would be be good too. ;0)
The blogger has it listed wrong, too...has them at 2800Y.

Via toysdaily....12800 yen (or $156.58us given yesterday's exchange rate)....

Dang, there's already the vinyl guys on YJA for under 10kY, but no non-stock photos of the figures.

I believe that to be the same seller, so I guess that makes sense. Really want to see real photos of these to see how tight the finish is. The stock photos make them look like they could pass for Gokin or really nicely finished models.

The page doesn't seem to mention it anywhere explicitly, but I assume they come unassembled like before, and if their previous kits are any indication, the finish should be very good. It won't pass for gokin, though. That's not the intent. In person, they look like what they are: nicely airbrushed matte vinyl. Well shaded and very realistically rendered.

The thing to keep in mind is that if they DO come unassembled...well...assembly of Max Factory kits isn't exactly trivial. You'll need a blow dryer, a very sharp knife, a lot of cyanoacrylate, and a fan (prevents that super glue haze, y'know!). Some experience with soft vinyl kits as complex as these helps. Lots of tiny bits to slice off sprues very delicately...

I say it's worth the price if you like the design.

HLJ's page seems to indicate assembly and glue required. That's a disappointment. I was hoping these would be pre-built like the CM's Corp Patlabor vinyls.

That's what I was expecting as well, but I have to admit, the prospect of assembling them myself is also pretty appealing. I've been looking at vinyl kits a lot lately... they are more like resin kits in that they are much more fun to assemble than injection plastic kits, but make into more satisfying end products.
