Here's a comparison shot of Super Robot Hobokin SKL next to Great and Z.
It just looks like Mazinkaiser with Devilman's head on its tits. Ho-hum.
What bugs me is that SKL doesn't even look like it comes from the same design continuity as the other two. Z had a half-a-dozen acute angles at most added to it in creating Great. SKL has that many added to just one forearm. Feels like someone wrapped a super robot in a bad heavy metal poster...

I used to wish for toys to be made of some of those posters when I was a kid. This post kind of makes wish for that all over again.

Y'know, when I was knee-high to a grasshopper, my mom let me wander into this metal record store adjacent to some discount clothing place she wanted to hit up. I knew nothing of this "metal", but my eyes were having a feast everywhere I looked. I started looking through one of those big "books" of posters...and I eventually found the cover art for Iron Maiden's "Somewhere in Time" LP:
Blew my motherfucking mind apart. The impression it made on me has lasted my whole life. Just the techno-organic detail of Eddie's design, his guns, the night-time/urban alleyway setting...all burned into me. It would be years before I learned what that artwork was all about (hell, I'm not even sure if I've ever heard an Iron Maiden song! :P ). But either way, the damage had been done!
...
All that said...I find absolutely nothing interesting, original, or compelling about this Mazinkraut SBD design. It's like what a thoughtless fanboy with very little design experience took everything he thought was "kewl" and "metal" and threw it together onto a vague Mazinger framework. I can't possibly imagine this having the same longevity as the original...or the longevity of an actual classic metal album cover.
