Someone answer my question about the Yamato VF-1A 1/60 2.0. Is Hikaru's VF-1A problem free or did they make minor improvements over the other VF-1A (Max, Kakikaze)?

I've had this guy for a few days, mostly it's all good but it has it's irritating little problems.

Good, Feels solid in all three modes. The everything locks together nice and tight.

Bad, codpiece falls off all the time. I guess it's a bit of an exhibitionist.

Ugly, lots of paint splotches, and fuzzy paint lines.

Overall I love this thing.

I dunno' maybe if Yamato didn't have such a piss-poor track record with regards to QC, that might have been a dumb thing to say... but considering the bone-head decisions they have made in the past (VF-0 shoulder materials,stupidly thin backpack hinges on 1/48's etc. the list goes ON AND ON,) it seems perfectly reasonable to expect them to fuck something up (albeit a little pessemisitic.) I don't see how that comment was any more idiotic than the next comment rushing to the toy's defense without having handled it first either. I expect that for some, Yamato as a whole have long ago worn out their right to be judged objectively. Only someone with no past experience with Yamato is likely to not have some sort of prejudice by now. Seriously, Yamato have earned the reputation they have, and it's a reputation that will probably take a lot of time to get rid of.

For the record, my preordered Blazer Valk will be here soon. ...call me optimistic...

It seems weird to be concerned about metal ball joints breaking. In my experience, metal ball joints in soft plastic sockets basically never break unless the sockets are screw-tightened and are too tight. Absent overtightening (which the user can easily fix before it breaks), the worst thing that could happen is that is that the joints get loose. It's not like softer plastic ball joints in hard sockets, which pretty much always break (lookin at you, pre-Revoltech Kaiyodo).

This argument is so played out, and the constant immediate dismissal of Yamato products before they're released so tired. My shelf of unbroken Yamato valks from all across the production timeline would like to have a word with the naysayers. My point is: Wait until the damn thing is out and has actually broken to cast judgement. These knee-jerk reactions ahead of time are absurd.

...eh, mayhap I was a tad harsh... just thought y'all were bein' kinda' dicky. Either way, the proof is in the putting. The fire valks seem to be holding up, so the Blazer seems like a safe bet. I hate the trashcan head on the -17S so I can easily pass and hold out for the -D.

Personally, I'm pretty much done preordering untested toys from Yamato though. I have been stung by the Yamato curse a couple of times, and fared well with most other releases, but getting stung at $100-$300 a pop is a hard thing to forget.

I think the concern was with half of the ball part of the joint being plastic... it does seem weird, but if it works then it works.

But that's even sillier. When's the last time you saw a ball joint crack straight through the ball? Every one I've ever seen break was through the shaft... either right at the base, or where it joins the ball.

haha... balls shafts... Anyway, I suppose that it's possible that the weaker plastic half of the shaft may not hold up to twisting as well as the metal side, or it could work out that the metal makes the shaft stronger overall. We'll see.

I get that a lot of people very likely feel this way...but it's still horseshit. I mean, it's one thing to feel burned by Yamato's early shitty releases...and simply decide on principle that you're not going to give them any more of your money. That's fine. But it's a whole other thing to state that ALL their releases henceforth will be shit. That's just fucking moronic. [Not that I'm saying YOU'RE saying this, B...I'm just talking in general.]

Companies grow their expertise, just as the individual designers working for them. As their industry experience mounts, they will naturally get better and better at what they do. Will they ever be perfect? Unlikely. Afterall, big poppa Bandai's Macross Frontier valks were hardly flawless when they dropped...

No, packaging known defective VF-1J's with Armor sets was horseshit. Expertise be damned, that was just plain liquidation at the consumer's expense.

With all of these new-fangled collector toys with intricate mechanisms, the wait and see principal seems the safest route these days, be it Yamato, Bandai, CM's or otherwise. They all have their fair share of recent fuck ups.

Truuuuuu. But again, boycott based on principle ("Yamato sold me a shitty product, so I'm never giving them my money again"). Not on some silly assumption that a future toy will be just as shitty ("Yamato sold me a shitty product, so everything they make until the end of time will suck").

Yeah, prejudice pretty much sucks on all accounts, but it's also pretty much how many consumers operate, and it can make or break a company. I'm guilty of it; Toynami was sort of that way for me for a while, but I'm totally sold on my Beta and my vinyl battlepod.

Logistics are a difficult thing for any company. Given their course of action, I surmise it was actually easier for them to take their existing stock (especially if it was already packaged and ready to ship) and deal with customer concerns as they arose through their free replacement part system.
