I think I'm buying this version of the Fatty rather then the murky green.

Question, I only just started watching VOTOMS (finally) so can someone please tell me what those huge red things are on the back of that Red Shoulder Scopedog?

I thought this was show was meant to be devoid of that kind of flashy gundam look.

Cool, a pile banker on his shoulder! I don't ever remember seeing it used in the anime, was it?

The big thing on that Red Shoulder's back is a command antenna.
That's one hell of an antenna, what's it use it for, commanding the attention of female pilots...
Dave,

If I recall correctly that is Fatty Land Type B, likely to be on sale later I am guessing.

Type A is what is out now. I haven't got mine, it would be killer if it comes with both A and B parts

Tim

It's definitely the Type B(I noted that under the picture in the initial post).

Studying the pictures more carefully, I noticed that it has the modified smoke launcher thingy on the left side of the backpack and seems to have the enlarged wrist armor on the left hand.

I ordered 2 of these Ground Fatties on the off chance that it comes with accessories for A and B, and even if it doesn't, it's still a really cool Fatty.

This is HLJ's scan of the back of the box:

That Scopedog is designated as "Commander Custom". Presumably, it's a high gain antenna for command and control of the entire Red Shoulder Battalion. It's collapsible when not in use and becomes fairly inconspicuous.
It sure looks to me that the 'B type' Fatty Ground type are surprise extra parts. I don't think the AG toys have had the habit of showcasing on the package things not included.

Roger, the Fatty G-type had that pile banger in the third Votoms OVA (Roots of Treachery? It's been awhile) and later Merowlink. I don't recall off the top of my head it actually being used, and that's a DAMN awkward place for a 'close combat' weapon, but it sure looks cool.

Liman's command gear Scopedog strikes me as a little cheap-out by comparison. I guess I expected the arm mounted Pile Banger (banker, or what would be called in construction 'pile driver') to be articulated and movable. I hope there's 'folded' antenna included.

Past time for the 'Big Battle' AG toys to start, altho they really haven't totally plumbed the Sunsa arc for ATs yet (and....now I think about it, Liman's squad and the Fatty G type still fit that, don't they? huh.) and have all of the Quent arc to mine, I'd still like to see more of the AT variations, the Battling customs, more vehicles...

HLJ's package pic shows a smaller version included in the three pack,
[www.hlj.com]

What happened to the vehicle set that was going to include the Snake Gunner, was that just a rumour>
Max, thanks for the link.

Wow, Takara really seems to be on their game. Folded and extended command antenna, check. They don't seem to highlight it but does it *look* like the arm mounted pile banker works and is not a solid lump of plastic? I suppose there could be 'standby' and 'attack' seperate parts, but even that would be OK because it gives you OPTIONS for display.

As to the mystery of the vanishing Snakegunner truck, I have no clue. It's like that first EX pack listed yet never seen, the Udo Battling set. Might have been something that made it to a certain stage then got pulled but not..I dunno..clearly stated as "NOT COMING OUT, STOP TALKING ABOUT IT" or something. Maybe with the Snakegunner someone just said "I'm working on some truck thing for the AG line" and someone jumped to assumptions.

I would like to think that at some point it might still happen, if Takara is SMART and keeps on going. I'd still like to see a 'Scopedog upgrade parts pack' set with extra hands, weapons and such.

Well there is that Big Carry set still on HLJ's radar, Amenbo has a picture and it does kinda look similar to the Snakegunner truck.
1) Is the Space Fatty rifle the same as the Land Fatty's or do they just have different barrels?

2) In Merowlink episode 3, are Stavros' and Gomez' ATs using the Land Fatty rifle?

I think the G Fatty weapon is the same as the S type, only with longer barrels and the covering removed.

Merowlink...damn, I don't have my tapes handy, no books that have the ATs from there, I'm screwed on a good answer, but I *think* they were using some form of AT carried Gatling gun, Melkian based not Ballarant.

OTOH, as One Year War Gundam keeps dipping into WW II, the world of Votoms seems to like to 'borrow' from the Viet Nam war, or at the least the Hollywood version thereof. So as some troops took to grabbing VC AK-47s, so it would be logical for AT troops, facing supply problems, might grab some enemy weapons. Also, if weapons fire is tracked by accoustic signature, using the enemy's weapons would tend to screw up their tracking.

Or it just looked cool to the animators.

Ya know, I'm staring hard at the G Fatty packaging. Somehow I'm getting the idea that Takara pulled a nasty trick from reading the 'this package includes the following' box, blind packing both the 'a' and 'b' types in the same case, under the same SKU. So for fans clamoring for one or the other, retailers will have to order more cases...oh, nasty, nasty trick if this is true.

Note how it DOESN'T say '6 shot missile pod x 1, 12 shot missile pod x 1'..it doesn't mention the TYPE of pod, just 'Missile pod x 1'

Dirty. I expect the Japanese blogs will be on fire over this.

I was thinking the same thing, unfortunately it doesn't seem to apply to the situation because they've never shown Balalant ATs being used on Melkia in Kummen (which is where Merowlink #3 takes place). At the time of the Merowlink episode, it's just mercenaries with Gilgameth ATs vs. low-tech guerillas.

Yah, I think that's more like it. ;p

The space Fatty's catapult launcher has 4 barrels, and the ground Fatty's has 3 barrels and a front hand grip, so there must be some difference. Everything else about them looks the same. I don't have any of my references handy, otherwise I'd check to see if the designations are the same.

It's looks like the Ground Fatty's rifle:

I finished Votoms up at the weekend and I'm itching to see the OVA's, I know they're not likely to make it out on disc now CPM has gone into bankruptcy so does anyone know if they're out there on bittorrent?
It's pretty obvious that the Heavy Gear designs owed a lot to VOTOMS, but I always felt that the Fatty in particular was echoed in the designs. After the Bandai Heavy Gear toys were cancelled (seen here: [www.rottentomatoes.com]) I was kinda bummed. In a roundabout way, now we're getting something somewhat close, I guess. To see what I mean, check out the rounded designs of the Southern gears here: [www.dp9.com] - very Land Fatty-ish.
Zinc Panic says the B type is a seperate release,

Well, we'll know once someone gets their ground Fatty in the mail.

My guess is they're just going to reuse the box and simply slap a sticker over the "A-type" label. Probably just a cost cutting measure.
It means" Type B is sold separately." The image on the right corner shows the dual shoulder missle pod on Type B. Type A shoulder missle launcher contains only one pod?

Thanks for the translation Jessy!

I got my Type A today and it definetely doesn't come with Type B parts. It's still the coolest Actic Gear toy so far.
The instructions includes assembly notes for the Type B, so Takara doesn't have to change much to sell the Type B in this box. This is easily my favorite Actic Gear ever.

Oh man, the color looks SO much better in your photos than the box photos. I could deal with a light tan, but the heavier color on the actual thing is really great.

-Paul Segal

"Oh, the anger is never far, never far." -SteveH
I think that's the same reason I like it so much. The color is sensible and very military evoking the M1A1/2 Abrams MBT.
Just opened mine today and it's really nice. Removable clips for the gun that stow on the back, a real rubber hose connecting the shoulder and backpack, the pile banker gizmo, rotating gliding wheels, they went all out on this one. If I can find a nit to pick, and I have to dig hard, it's only that some of the surfaces are glossy while others are matte, but it's really not that noticeable. I'm definitely picking up the B type when it comes out.
I just opened up mine today, and I have to agree. This is a series worth following. They are really getting better and better. I just wish that they'd hurry up and make a tortoise, strikedog (blue and blue&white), and Blood Sucker.

By the way, the new Microman Chirico is up for preorder along with another figure...only I don't know where he's from. He comes with a motorcycle.

That's Merowlink, from the OVA of the same name. It was initially announced as an exclusive to the first pressing of the DVD edition of the OVA, but now the set with the bike is mass-released. More info in this thread:

Which, by the way, is killing me. I'm preordered the DVD's as soon as they were announced, but I love that bike.
Got my Ground Fatty Type B. I like it just as much as Type A.

- It has a big ring around its left wrist. Why?
- It has different knees. Why?
- It has a little man who sits in its stomach. Why?

It's in the line art for Type B.

Also in the line art for Type B.

> - It has a little man who sits in its stomach.

Also in the line art or implied for all Armored Troopers.
But WHY??? Does it run on dilithium crystals or protoculture?
I got my 2 Type B's a couple weeks ago and love them. I used to buy every Actic Gear that came out, but I stopped about 2 months ago because it turned into endless Scopedog variations. From now on, I'm only buying non-Scopedog Actic Gear toys. I'm even totally underwhelmed by the upcoming AG Scopedog 2.0 or whatever it's going to be called.

I'll be truly thrilled if the AG Scopedog second version doesn't suck. But after just one, I'm definitely done buying anything based on the first version Scopedog. Can't wait for my Ground Fatty B though. Without that hose on its arm/backpack to pop out and drive me crazy, it should be perfect.
