Well, first off, Nick Fury was black in the Ultimates, which is obviously the more modern setting/interpretation Marvel Studios was going for with these movies (as opposed to the original Marvel Universe).

But either way, Fury's a good guy...and that's kinda my point! It's fine to make a good guy of color...but the liberal racism in most mainstream media would never want to bring up a touchy subject like--*gasp*--a brown villain. That's kinda why I felt a little letdown by Kingsley's Mandarin: I was hoping they'd do him for real, but actually have the nuts to take on something as deep as West Asian terrorism...

Quote
H-man

Heh...I dunno. I'm not a huge fan of fucking with classics. And while the racial demographics in mainstream comics makes (black) baby Jesus cry, Spidey qualifies as a "classic" in my mind...and probably shouldn't be fucked with. White Nick Fury was always kind of a dildo...so I don't really have a problem with his racial-transplant. Johnny Storm? Yeesh...tough one.

Oh, I just thought of an interesting counterpoint: they made the Kingpin in the Daredevil movie black. Michael Clarke Duncan (RIP) was pretty awesome in the role.

There's strong buzz that Johnny Storm for the "Fantastic Four" reboot will also be African American. Marvel played around with a latino Spiderman in the comics... the Sherlock Holmes show, "Elementary" features a Watson that is an Asian American woman (Lucy Liu) and just revealed Moriarity to also be a woman. And in the tv show 'Hannibal" (really well done btw), the FBI character of Jack Crawford (Scott Glenn in "Silence of the Lambs") is now played by Laurence Fishburne.

Oh.. and enjoyed Star Trek Turn on the Dark also - it carried over the fun vibe and chemistry that made the first movie so watchable with a slightly stronger bad guy plot. But the intentional parallels to "Wrath of Khan" - especially in the 3rd act came across as a bit heavy handed.

I guess Ben Kingsley was too busy playing another not-Asian! ;)

Y'know, when previews first started coming out for this movie, pretty much everyone said, "Khan...right?". But at the same time, everyone was thrown off by the lily-whiteness of the actor being shown!

I still haven't seen the movie, but I hear that while it's substantially flawed, it still delivers a little better than Iron Man 3 (at least for fans/nerds...not necessarily the average movie-goer).

But I guess speaking more to your point, I personally do NOT like the modern trend of replacing classic villains-of-color with white proxies. Sure, those "classic" villains may have been a bit sketchy (okay, the Mandarin was pretty fucking bad!)...but "whitening" them doesn't make shit any better.

In my opinion, if you wanna counteract racist stereotypes used in old-timey villains-of-color, round them out. Give them depth. Make them full, interesting, and realistic characters: it's not about pretending stereotypes don't exist. It's about giving the characters a context in order to humanize them and make them believable.

Yes I use a FDM printer. There was some reprinting of failed parts but the figure worked out suprisingly well in the first place. The only thing that really needed replacing were the hand and ankle joints. All other corrections were simply based on my decision to switch from a figure that needs gluing to one that can be snapped together. For that some of the plugs on the arms had to be adapted.
I gave the joints a little bit of tolerance to avoit polishing. That makes them less tight then those of a proper action figure but as long as it is good enough for posing the figure I am allright with it.
The figure is not perfect yet but for my first try at something this complex I am quite happy with the outcome.

OK, so when I was a kid, I had one of a series of toys that I cannot find any info for.

It was a glove that had a vaguely Barbie sized male doll torso on it. Most of the glove was black, but the pointer and middle fingers were made to look like shorts so that those fingers became the legs for the figure.

There were maybe 4 or 5 different kinds, all sports players. They came with boots to put on the ends of your fingers to complete the lifelike package. (accurate for sports players with one leg significantly shorter than the other)

I had the skateboarder. I'm pretty sure there were also soccer and football figures.

I cannot come up with any combination of "glove", "doll", "figure", "sports", "toy" etc. etc. that yields any results.

Does anyone here remember what I am talking about? This would have probably been late 1980s.

Thank you

Hello everyone!

I recently got into 3D printing and I was wondering how far I could take the functionality of my models. This is my first attempt at a figure with proper “action figure” articulation. It worked out pretty well. It basically works like a snap together model kit. It has about 30 points of articulation. I had to do some sandpapering in order to make everything fit together but that is something one should expect when 3D printing. The figure holds firmly together and all the joints have a nice range of motion. The seam lines are a little bit big but I believe that has more to do with the resolution of my printer then the 3D file. The figure is about 7 inches tall. It has a couple of swapable hands and the weapons can be stored on the back of the figure. The figure is called Dan Generiko and he is a hero in an apocalyptic world where genetically enhanced humans wage war against humans who have given up their natural bodies for robotic ones. Dan protects the ordinary humans who are caught in the middle of the fighting of the two factions.
^^Okay, that's pretty fucking awesome!

When I think "mockumentary", I think King of Kong and the like. Y'know...stuff that's humorous, satirical, or just generally tongue-in-cheek. Atlantic Rim didn't seem like that at all...but given your explanation, it makes perfect sense. And in fact, the whole "bootleg" thing meant to bamboozle ignorant movie-goers, in and of itself, is kinda hilarious!

I think your over thinking this...

"Mockbuster" basically means a "fake blockbuster". It's the same way "mockumentary" all boils down to being basically a "fake documentary".

The Asylum is a small little film production studio in LA that is infamous for producing "Mockbusters".

Basically when a big studio wants to put out a blockbuster they have their marketing departments go into full on hype mode months and months before the film is to be released. The Asylum films just piggy back on all that hype with their films...And their film are produced very quickly (less than five months from first production meeting to sending it off complete with all special effects, sounds and music to the DVD/Blu-Ray factory for reproduction) cheaply (way less then a $1 million dollars) and timed to be released onto video rental stores selves and on-demand (Netflicks, Redbox, etc) services the same day the big studio releases their blockbuster in theaters. All this to take advantage of consumer ignorance and confusion... Basically, in the toy world, we would call them Knockoffs.

I love the Scary Movie series (at least the first few). Spaceballs? One of the greatest ever. Hell, give me UHF, goddammit. But why bother making a "mockbuster" when it doesn't actually mock anything? Or am I just totally missing some obvious joke??

Now, I don't own any NECA stuff and I always associated their products to be "McFarlanish"... nicely detailed, PVC figs with limited articulation but I forgot they have done some really compelling stuff in the past, like the MATRIX stuff, the big ass BALROG, and the jumbo sized Predators. But it looks like these Pacific Rim figs might turn out to be pretty cool. But I wonder if it's better to hold out for the inevitable Diecast toys from one of them Hong Kong companies?

NECA does good shit on most of their lines. Their earlier products were more statue-esque than figure-esque, but that's changed over the last few years. Their Predator 2 figures, at all scales, are all totally badass.

As for Pacific Rimmers... I could care less. It looks like Del Toro's typically over-wraught fan-boy wankage. He's so much better when dealing with more original and intimate stories.

I've just recently sat down to catch up on the last couple story parts online.

^^
Also, that girl's work on the RGA costume is a real labor of love. I'd love to see that in person at one of the upcoming events.

Edit: And gee-doinkits, how'd I miss out on announcement above of BATTERY OPERATED T-SHIRTS?! What???

Maybe this has been posted before but these guys are subbing and streaming a bunch of old school anime including Blackjack, Creamy Mami, and probably of particular interest to toy fans of recent SOCs and older DX toys, Yatterman, New Yatterman, Tekkaman and Tobikage.

[animesols.com]

What's interesting is that they've partnered with the Japanese studios and have a kickstarter-like funding model for the physical releases. I sincerely doubt stuff like Yatterman has a chance of reaching the goal (but I'll pledge anyway) but I would think at least Tekkaman and Blackjack would.
