Okay, so FP's Chromedome arrived yesterday, and I'll be damned if it isn't the best TF in the deluxe-sized class evar, just as FP's Swindle is the best scout-sized TF evar. This is also one of the best TFs in any class size. And that's coming from a guy who doesn't even like the Chromdome character design. In fact, I always thought (and still think) that Chromedome looks kinda like ass. That FP could make me want to keep a toy of him is a testament to FP.

Transformation is a tad more complex than I like, and in fact, this is about as complex as I can deal with before things stop being fun....it's near that line, but doesn't cross it (unfortunately, I think FP's other releases, especially those neat-looking Stunticons, are very much 3D puzzles instead of toys).

Though the parts do snap together very well in car mode, the transformation is very unforgiving of the slightest misalignment or misstep. After a couple more transformations, though, I'm sure it won't be too much of an issue. The way the parts come together so cleanly in both modes is something HasTak can learn from.

Putting Chromedome against any deluxe-sized mainline TF by HasTak, the comparison is a joke. Especially in light of some of the info posted by the MMC designer, it's mindblowing how much better, in terms of design and execution, these third-party toys are than their HasTak counterparts. The joints are all tight and sturdy, and the transformation is clever. I'd prefer thicker plastic, and some of the parts look like they could snap if pressure is applied incorrectly, but I wonder how much thicker/sturdier materials would interfere with the intricacy of the engineering/transformation. It's a tradeoff I wouldn't mind, though.

Pick one up if you can still find it for a reasonable price.

Man I know Fansproject not-swindle is cool on his own but I really like the way the set improves Energon Bruticus.

The MMC stuff is interesting, especially given that we now will have three Not Predakings. It's also interesting in light of Toyworld's reveal of a not Brainwave, which directly competes with Fanoroject's offering. I initially thought they did the tank because it wasn't yet in Fansproject's reveals but seems like we'll see two sets of Headmasters at slightly different sizes and very different design aesthetics.

Yeah, his posts are informative. His point about how tooling costs account for nearly half of overall costs for a third partier, compared to how insignificant tooling costs are for Hasbro, is one of the clearer explanations I've seen for why third-party stuff costs so much more than HasTak's, though it doesn't excuse HasTak stuff from being crap compared to the better third-party stuff out there.

Cool...thanks for cross-posting that, g. I don't doubt what he says for a second...in fact, the economy of scale when it comes to 3P offerings has never been a shocker in my mind. In fact, I know quite a few folks working in the toy industry and from what I understand, his $5k estimate for total R&D is extremely conservative!

Anyway, the bit about being inspired by Genesic GaoGaiGar was real interesting! I was talking to Jeremy the other day about this toy (he was complaining that his feet were too big! and they *are*, I guess! LOL)...and I had actually guessed that this was the inspiration:

Thanks for the warning, Fuji. Duly noted, and I'll definitely be careful with that when the toy arrives.

A user by the name of Griffith76 has been posting on the TF Boards. Apparently, he's a designer for MMC (he mentioned he designs for another toy company, too). Here are some excerpts from his various posts on MMC's Predaking:

On the release schedule (Bovis is coming out ahead of Talon):
As I've mentioned before, the normal practice for us would be to start preorders when the figure is almost ready and production is about good to go. The preorders for Talon and Bovis were forced to start much earlier than planned (and now the release sequence got really messed up with Talon pushed back) and thus there was a special discount to compensate for it. But I've got a feeling that the early-bird discounts are here to stay.

Personally I don't see the need to rush out preorders for the rest of the team. As much as its good for business to secure as many sales for a future product there are many who are buying their first MMC product and I sincerely hope that no one is buying stuff blindly out of hype but get them knowing what is to be expected for sure. (now I hope the boss doesn't put up a new preorder after I've just said all that)

And naturally we're pushing our hardest to get Bovis out first. No dates yet though but word's factory is already working on T2(testshot).

On the joints:
Boss had requested Cassy to design joints that worked like Giant's. I'm not certain if they are exactly like Giant's since I've never taken mine apart to study them but I did found the design a little troublesome with the springs and shit so I redesigned and simplified them based on how I think they should function and hey, they work!

Basically all of the combiner joints are the same. Ratchet on both ends. Ratchet swivel. Automatic locking when pushed in. Release button to pull out.

On the 6th figure:
Nope. Personally I'm not too supportive of the 6th member thing coz I'm a purist myself and I'll keep my own combined figure as the original 5 member team. You can't see talon at all from the front if he's attached as a backpack. But I do support the idea of releasing the 6th optional member as a cheaper promotional figure for folks who have never handled a recent MMC product and not willing to risk paying more for one. But as usual, don't quote me on price issues. I do not make decisions, I can only give suggestions to the bosses.

On what contributed to the image/feel he wanted for Predaking:

On the relationship with Fansproject and TFC (apparently TFC went back on its word and is releasing its own upcoming Predaking):
TFC used to be our main distributor in China for the HOS stuff so naturally it was sorta a friendly relationship. We are on good terms with FP as well and this project being risky and ambitious as hell, its natural that the boss approached the bigger players in the industry to make sure things don't go wrong. I was with him when we visited their offices during our annual trip and still remember the words (not the exact words and not in English of coz) "We're thinking of doing Predaking, is that in your plans? If you've planned for that we'll skip it and do something else" He said that to both TFC and FP bosses and here's the funny thing; both said no, they've not planned for it but heard that the other might be doing it. We got confirmation from each of them saying they're not gonna do it so we commissioned Cassy and it was much later that the black/red sihoulettes were shown in TFcon 2012 (Cassy's V.1).

On production runs and costs (V scale refers to Voyager class scale):
A production run means a single undisrupted cycle of injection of parts followed by painting, assembly and packing. Size of runs depend on a lot of factors but normally factories refuses small runs (small factories might require a min run of 1000 while huge factories might refuse anything below 10,000) because they "don't make money" from those.

I'll give you a simple example (the number are not 100% accurate but not way off) for design vs tooling vs manufacturing costs and how much weight they hold in final pricing:

Say you employ someone to design a certain Voyager sized figure, your typical design cost might range from $2000-4000. Protoype print might cost $1000-2000. Typically the factory requires at least 3 copies so they will replicate every single part in resin and its actually pretty costly but this cost is hidden. So your direct R&D cost is say $5000.

Tooling cost for a typical V scale figure can be $40,000 - $60,000 so say $50,000

Manufacturing includes injection, painting, assembly, packing and misc stuff. Cost depend on quantity. Typical quantities range from 2000 - 3000 but rumors say some of our competitors can hit 10000 and above. So lets keep the quantity conservative at 3000 and the cost to be $60,000.

There are lots of other miscellaneous costs like storage, overheads and etc that have to be accounted for in the price mark up as well under "costs" but lets just keep things simple at "production costs" for now.

So "tooling" for 3K units makes up for over 45% of the total amount received by the factory. That's very significant to us and the factory.

Now lets do some guess-work for Hasbro. I know absolutely nothing for their numbers but I'll be making some guesses here. Let's just assume a conservative production quantity of 500k for a single "mold". And say their factory charges them 75% lesser in unit price than what they are charging us for a run of 3000. That's $5 hasbro pays per piece for manufacturing vs $20 for MMC. Now that makes total Hasbro pays to factory is $2.5M just for manufacturing. Not including repaint over repaint over repaint.

Tooling costs then becomes 2%. And I believe that I'm on the conservative side with the estimates on the amounts that hasbro pays to the factories but I can be completely wrong of course.

So you understand why its not that crazy for the factory to do free tooling for the molds? Do you be fussing over a measly $40-50k when your client is paying you millions for the production of a single figure?

On the cost of the toy:
My explanation wasn't to imply or justify anything at all. Its just what I know for sure and extra information for you guys who are curious about how the prices came to be. For normal projects its pretty straightforward.

We get a proper quotation from the factory and its pretty much finalized. Minor fluctuations are either absorbed by the factory or MMC itself (fluctuation in cost always go up, never down since they are usually due to last minute changes or addition of parts)

For the case of a combiner the situation is very different from our previous projects because of extra combining kibble and weapons. And the fact that our hand was forced to release preorders before we have the actual finalized costs complicates things quite a bit.

Basically I'm merely stating what I know to have you guys understand what I do not know and the limitation of my knowledge of stuff in the company. What I can share is just personal view and thoughts and I cannot go to the boss requesting for an explanation why we do not sell repaints cheaper (which I totally feel that we should) because my contribution here is personal and I'm not acting as a PR representative for MMC. Eg. I can (and did) ask "Are we gonna sell Tigris cheaper?", I get my answer/explanation and I leave it at that. I cannot ask the boss "Why aren't we selling Fortis cheaper when its a retool? Whats your justification?" because I already know what are all the answers I might get. "Because we are a business." "Because the cost/savings is split between the 2 figures." "Because we need to cover part of Leo's costs and bring the price down." "Because we can." All these explanations/reasons/excuses are valid and there is no way for you and I to know if they are true unless we have access to the cost/profit documents for the project. But then I'll probably get asked in return: "Whose side are you on anyway?"

I do know the answer to "what the money is going to" and I can answer that truthfully. The money is going to people who deserve it. The money is basically split between cost and profit. "Profit" goes to MMC while "cost" goes to the factory. Either party deserves what they're getting out of the project because I do know how hard every single person in MMC works to get our customers the best products we can and our factory is very dedicated as well (to the point of being over fussy on certain issues). So there you have it

I like Code a great deal - much more so than Ben. I also like Not-Hardhead as well, but I had a problem with the side tabs as well. One of mine broke off fairly easily. Code's instructions are lacking in an area that will lead to breaking if you are not careful. When attempting to insert the headmaster figure in the cockpit, you need to swing up the handlebars to allow the figure to sit. Instructions do not including info on needing to move the handlebars, so when I went to insert the figure one broke off. Be very careful there. Otherwise, the plastic used in code is of significantly higher quality plastic than in Hardbone, which feels like KO quality to me. I think that in general the transformation in Code is much more interesting, and they did some neat stuff with hiding the head mode face when in robot mode. I think Ben's complaint about the lack of ability to merge with an old G1 figure is a bit... weird. Why would you do that, outside of as an experiment?

I know there's a rage face out there that properly captures my feelings (not rage) about that not-Predaking. Crotch-thrust notwithstanding, that Rampage looks killer, but obviously, the star of the show is Feral Rex. Could a 3rd party TF bootlegger be *actually* doing an awesome job with a combiner's face???
Well, regarding Code, Ben made it sound weak next to Toy World's Hardbone:

Yeah, I actually read Ben's review a couple of days ago. I have to say, though, that any toy you improve by breaking a piece off of is not a toy that I'm that interested in. This video review turned me off of Not-Bonerchamp once and for all--[www.youtube.com]

The reviewer can get annoying sometimes, but generally, I like that he's discriminating about these toys, pointing out their flaws as opposed to simply gushing. Specifically, the loose elbow swivels and cannon swivel, and extra-long side tabs (one of which Ben broke) were turnoffs.

Don't know how Code will compare, but peeps on the TF board have been raving about this guy since it first came out.

On another note:
We've all seen the drawing of combined Predaking, but wow, it looks delicious in 3-D form.

And G1 Rampage always looked doofy. This one doesn't. That's an accomplishment.

Blast from the past! One of Fansproject's first projects is still my favorite thing the company's done. I've got Code on the way, and if it lives up to the hype, it'll be right up there.

Swindle's a nifty little toy, easily the most well built toy ever at this size class, and better even than a lot of bigger official HasTak Transformers.

The character was one of the few from G1 that was actually interesting, the Decepticon version of Michael Milken.

Much as I love Showy designs, I find myself a convert to Toy-ey colors. iGear's Huffer looked much better in the darker G1 toy colors, and Swindle does, too. Not only did Swindle get a tan, there are additional paint apps on the robot's chest and the back of the Humvee to simulate the stickers from the G1 toy.

Already a neat toy, now even neater. The only major gripe is that the backpack doesn't peg or lock into anything in robot mode, but gravity keeps it down. The hip balls and thigh swivels were a tad loose, but an encounter with my bottle of floor polish tightened everything up (maybe too tight now).

The catch is you have to pony up $130 for the set (including Blast Off and the Bruticus parts). But they'll be easy to get rid of on eBay, along with the mini-Shockwave figure FP's included with the set.

To me, this is FP at its best, when it's doing nothing but following the G1 blueprint. Alt mode is inaccurate--though still awesome--and the robot mode is spot-on.

This makes it so Spike does not properly transform into the smaller head.

There is also a red double-barreled gun that hides inside of the left hand of the large Fortress Maximus robot. One of the clips that holds the double-barreled gun is either incorrectly shaped or damaged so the gun falls out instead of staying in place.

I've already sent BBTS customer service an email about. It seems to me the issue with Spike's thighs is just factory assembly line negligence, but the messed up clip for the gun is weird. It almost seems like a lot of the plastic is slightly too soft.

Some additional thoughts on Springer.

1) There are certain things about the tabbing that bug me. Not a lot, but enough. The shoulders tab into the center yellow chest piece via tiny tabs at the front. The shoulder joints themselves are fairly solid, but the tabs can come loose when you rotate the shoulders...not the nightmarish scenario involving Blitzwing, but the fit could be better, and over time, I'm not sure how well the shoulders will hold, given that the little tabs are helping to keep the shoulders pegged to the chest.

2) In car mode, the side windows can pop off, too. Most parts tab into place, but it's not a perfect fit. I didn't bother with chopper mode, but as far as fit/finish, that's the worst of the three modes, according to most people who've said that the shoulder sections have nothing to peg into.

3) The upper thighs have swivels, and I noticed that on one of the swivel sections, a big chunk of plastic was gouged out. As a result, the part of the plastic that forms the hole for the swivel peg is wafer thin and over time could simply evaporate. Given my luck with QC, or given HasTak's QC record, this may or may not be surprising. Oddly, the swivel motion itself was fine, but the damaged plastic was a dealbreaker.

Returned this thing to Target, and I'm not inclined to buy it again. Oh, well.

Was doing some shopping at Target and accidentally found this guy. Wasn't even looking for him, as I had him on preorder at BBTS. After tax, it's virtually the same price as at BBTS.

I've been telling Mr. Crush that I've become weary of high-end adult-collectibles-styled TFs. They're more effort than I'd like to put into a toy, or they're fragile or riddled with inexcusable QC issues, or they're both. End result is, I'm having less and less fun with them. I don't even want posable fingers. I want hands with holes that you plug weapons into. I'm that primitive in my tastes.

On the order of that, Springer hits the spot--it's easy to mess with and it's fairly durable and it looks good. It's not accurate to GeeWun, but I've become more tolerant about that shortcoming lately. It looks pretty good, and there's a hint of Revoltingtech in the way it stands, though (THANK GOD) the crotch thrust is absent.
Solid ratchets in the elbows and knees, though I wouldn't mind the shoulder balls being a wee bit tighter. Also, while everything more or less pegs in, given the soft, pliable plastic that makes up much of the figure, the parts-locking of the various modes usually involves the plastic tabs mushing into the slots. It's a nitpick, and overall, this is a solid toy. The way it transforms, and the way the arms and legs fold, demonstrate a sensible and practical complexity, and don't, as my Masterpiece TFs often did, leave me scratching my head as to why the designers saw fit to so frustrate me for no apparent reason.
Aesthetically, it's skinnier than I'd like it to be, and the scrawniness is more obvious when you put it next to a Showy 'bot. (On the other hand, Tracks veers a bit too much toward the cheap/insubstantial side of toy construction.)
I'm sticking with simple toys for now. This one I may or may not keep in the long run. It's a good toy, but the skinny-man look I'm not so crazy about. If it were bulked up like Springer ought to be, I'd be shouting the praises of this thing like everyone else on the TF boards is doing.

I'm late to the party on these, but I finally got the Fansproject not-Chromedome and not-Combaticons reissues.

Chromedome is pretty cool, although he's got a chunky chest and he's obviously of a different design aesthetic from the rest of Fansprojects stuff. Still, I love the little headmaster transformation and the robot itself is solid in both modes. Plus cool packaging.

Swindle and Blast Off are now ancient molds by 3rd party standards, but this is my first experience with them, and they do improve that Energon Bruticus a great deal. They're tiny, but that's fine with me. I think the only difference between this and the first release are the colors (changed to match the new Asia-exclusive Combaticons release) and the inclusion of a little Shockwave targetmaster, which is pretty floppy but as an extra is fine (plus it's pretty cool in robot mode). I love how they found ways to integrate all the extra parts onto the existing and new figures.

Also, because there was a sale and relatively cheap shipping, I got a Perseus, which is a Shattered Glass white repaint of TFC's Hercules/not-Devastator. I went with Giant early on and never got a Hercules, and didn't really want another Devastator but wanted to at least try the mold out. This one came with the Rage of Hercules add on, which seems to be hard to find for the regular release, plus the bad guy combiners are taking over, so I bit.

I only unboxed and played with the leg robots and the left arm robots, mainly so that I could actually combine them with TFC's not-Superion. As a torso by itself, not-Silverbolt was pretty underwhelming, but with some relatively proportionate legs and another arm, he's actually pretty cool (just don't look at that add on chest piece wrong, because it will flop around). Looking forward to the rest of the not-aerialbots now. Also it seems like it's too big for a Detolf shelf...

True, it's just a little beef I have with figures not having enough ankle articulation, it looks like their skating on the insides of their feet lol. But your right it will depend on how strong the hip joints are, if not I can see this thing doing the splits if you try posing the legs to far apart.

Haha..."stick up the butt stance"!

Well, that blurry shot of the potential import version shows him standing with his feet spread a bit. Doesn't look terribly unstable...as long as the hip joints are strong. But it'll be interesting to see regardless...

Oh, and his proportions aren't THAT far off from a classic Jumbo's...so there's nothing wrong with the stick up the butt stance! :P

I'll probably just get the Hasbro version of Metroplex, shipping for the Takara one alone is enough for me to accept some of the plainess about it. I'm also sure there will be 3rd party companies making all sorts of accessories for it like larger guns and stuff. Still it looks massive but my only concern is that there looks like there is zero ankle articulation which means unless you pose it in the stick up the butt stance it will be standing on the inside of it's feet. That's fine for a 6" figure but a toy that's 2' tall you would think they would want the most secure stance possible which means flat footed with strong ankle ratchets.

Ha! I've totally done that, Jon! When I first heard about this toy--originally billed as an "FoC" toy--I looked up how the character looked in the game and found a huge (~30 minute) play-through starting with Prime walking around the city and being led to Metroplex's "spark chamber" or whatever. Then there was a dope cut scene where he wakes up, and a bunch of game play I mostly fast forwarded through...though watching him lumber about in the background, perform "air strikes" you--as Prime--call down, and smash these big gun emplacements was kinda fun! I won't spoil how it ends, but I definitely enjoyed it.
